The Assembly voted 66-2 for the measure requiring employers to pay men and women the same for “substantially similar” work, with exceptions for seniority, merit and productivity

Since this is California, I assume this is going to be awesome for male porn stars.

When are people going to stop quoting that bad statistic? Every time I hear it, it's like someone's put a Bieber song on the radio. Most people want it gone because it's not doing favours to anyone for it to be there.

Seniority, merit, and productivity are pretty much what account for the gaps, so I cannot imagine this'll do much to alleviate the "problematic" gap that naturally results from the divergent behaviors and career choices of the two genders.

That it makes exceptions for seniority, productivity, and merit is good.

If it has wording of the equal pay act that failed in the federal congress, though, it would still be putting the onus of proving that on the employer. Which creates a pretty brutal legal environment for employers.

I support these bills (since they won't hurt men and will clear up the residual discrimination that does persist) so long as that isn't the case. But they won't solve the issue. What will solve the issue for the most part is providing maternity and paternity leave nationwide. I don't have kids, or want them, but I want that for my friends who are parents whose careers are suffering because childcare in my area is a second mortgage.

I don't think we should be labeling this 'discrimination.' It is gender neutral in language and thus also protects men, if in some future environment employers started overpaying women for the same work in fear that they'd be sued. Then men would be able to sue.

As an entrepreneur I buy productivity. Nothing more, nothing less. If I was told that I should pay more to, say, people wearing pants just because they are wearing pants, I just moved my business elsewhere. It's pretty simple.

And this will not appease the feminists, because they are looking for equality of outcomes, and this will do nothing for them.
