What gets me is the pervasive narrative that women are being beaten/raped/stalked on a daily basis and society does nothing or condones it (aka "rape culture").

And when a woman shares an experience that goes against the idea that men harassing/assaulting women is commonly accepted behavior, she (and everyone else) talks about how amazed they are by it.

And then another woman shares a similar story. And another, and another, and another.

And I just wonder how many "some random stranger spoke up/stepped in/looked out for me" stories need to be shared before the "women are always at risk and society does nothing to help them" lie is actually questioned.

This story is a lie, or a least a big exaggeration with the intention of making the man sound creepy.

This is intended to make it sound as if the man was following her secretly or as if she hadn't realized he was with her but the fact is she knew he was coming with her. There was no "suddenly he appeared" crap going on because they entered the same elevator at the same time.

Note the use of the word "drunk" there. He was drunk! What a creep. Of course he was drunk because he'd been drinking with her for a while, so he's no more creepy than she is on that basis.

Are we expected to believe that she didn't notice him in the same elevator as her?

I wonder if this is a retelling of "Elevatorgate" because the material facts seem very similar. Two people have a lot of drinks together late. They go up to their rooms, the man suggests something more, the woman says no. End of story. Therefore the man is a rapist.

I dont believe this for one fucking moment, if you are in a hotel and see a drunk mand and women together YOU ASSUME THEY ARE MARRIED OR A COUPLE.

the idea that some stranger saw a man and a women together and drunk and so assumed he must be a rapist IN A FUCKING HOTEL. is unbelievable.

Lets try a word swap

A black man who seemed totally normal and okay hung out with me and bought me a couple of drinks tonight. We talked a lot, but he insisted that since we're both married it was only conversation and that's what he wanted. He got me a couple of strong drinks and after the last one I drunkenly headed up to my room.

Then I noticed he came up to my floor, he was right behind me asking me if we could hang out in one of our rooms. Um, no. I told him that I'm absolutely not okay with that.

About two minutes after I arrived in my room I received a call from the front desk. Someone was concerned after they saw that a black man, drunk, follow me into the elevator and just wanted to make sure I was okay.

His room is on the same floor as hers so, still feeling the effects of drinking, he gets on the elevator with her. She is also drunk as well.

Yeesh. It's like this woman is unaware of a consensual second party (HER) in all this.

I'm really not seeing the problem here.

The hotel bar staff aren't stupid. They saw the interaction and then saw him follow her out of the bar and up the elevator after the had parted ways.

A simple phone call to check in a a pretty minor action and not 'problematic' in the least.

They didn't assume 'any male'. They assumed 'this was a little suspicious'. Consider that there were few enough guests that they new which room she was in, so why wouldn't they have noticed the particulars of this interaction.
