Its good that she has good grades but if she is not physically capable of passing the test she should not be allowed to graduate and become a firefighter. This can put many people at risk when she is a part of a group responding to a fire. Regardless of gender, if someone fails the test that deems whether they are fit for duty, they shouldn't be allowed to become a firefighter.

My dad was a firefighter for 25 years in San Diego. He was dealing with this kind of shit forever. The female firefighters take a different physical test than the men, or some cities just lowered the bar for everyone instead of having a separate test for the women.

I have no absolutely no problem with women being firefighters, as long as they meet the same physical standards as the men. The absolute truth is that there are almost no women that can handle the physical requirements. You've got around 70 LBS of gear on, minimal oxygen, you're skin is burning, and you've got to be able to singlehandedly carry a full grown man out of a building, possibly down stairs.

Here's the real problem, let's say a women makes the cut. The crew she's on goes out on a call that happens to be a multiple story structure fire. What if it's her and a male firefighter that are the last ones in the building. The roof collapses, or whatever and the male is incapacitated. She now has to get him out with the added weight of both of their gear. And that is in no way far fetched, I've heard plenty of stories about roofs and walls collapsing right on top of guys clearing rooms.

There are women who can meet the standard. Watch some womens UFC and you'll see there are some kick ass ladies out there, but there is no god damn reason to lower the standard.

They have already been promoting minorities that didn't pass the academic test for years (remember that lawsuit a year ago)?

Plus, look at all of the older fire fighters that no longer could pass the physical test either.

City either lets women that can't pass the standards in or pays out millions in discrimination lawsuits against women and minorities.

She already got a break by being too old to join. Next up she'll sue when she finds out she makes less money than another person in her precinct and then demand 3mths maternity.

If they are really worried about being sued etc then why not just split the fire departments responcibilities into 2. 1 Basic Fire & Community Support (this is for small basic fires, checking hydrants, cats in trees, jaws of life etc) and 2 Heavy Fire Support (Which is all the full hardcore tested fire people that do the big dangerous stuff). Allow both men and women to join whichever one they want (as long as they pass the test for the one they want) and grade the danger pay accordingly.

I am a 300 lb man. Now, I may not live in NY, but if my house ever caught fire and she was one of the responders I'd be dead. Think about that for a second, "feminists". There are physical job requirements for a reason; I'm not miraculously going to lose weight if my house lights aflame so that she can carry me. My home won't miraculously stop flaming and smoking because she's too slow and running out of air.

When ever I see stuff like this I just think "Tuskegee Airmen". It's possible that these physical tests aren't important. Highly unlikely, but possible. If a bunch of people that can't pass the physical tests want in the FDNY, let them. Form a special all women fire house with what ever restrictions the women themselves deam reasonable. Send this group of figherfighters to burning buildings and see if any survive.

Most people thought that the Tuskegee Airmen would be little more than a distraction for enemy fighters so the "real" pilots, the white pilots would take less fire and have an easier time shooting at the enemy. At the time the expectation of an all black fighter wing was worse than the expectation of an all female Fire house.

My stance is preform the experiment and see what happens. Keep preforming the experiment until people are convinced of the results.
