I just found out about this video now through a Norwegian news article. It says that both Hollaback and the actress in the video have been receiving death threats.
Browsing the frontpage of /r/mensrights right now my general impression is that most of you guys here didn't like the video. (Not saying anyone here has been threatening anyone, just pointing out that many REALLY didn't like the video.)
I should add that though I'm not really a Mens Rights Activist, I'm at least a sympathizer. Still, watching the video, it seems like they have a point. I don't think what those cat-calling guys are doing is okay. I wouldn't like it as a dude. It doesn't matter that it's meant as a compliment.
Imo, if you like a girl, approach her respectfully and talk to her. If she obviously don't like, or wants, the attention, just let her be. Don't be butthurt. If you really want to find a girl, why don't you hit on a girl in an appropriate setting?
The video has been criticized for the white/non-white ratio, but even if it's accurate and the problem is mostly the non-whites, that is still a problem, right?
If girls get cat-called as much as the video suggests, I'd say it's a problem. If it's somehow not accurate, and cat-calling just happens rarely, once in a while, I think the girls should..

I have been baffled by the response to the video on this subreddit. I am a lifelong New Yorker and, yes, street harassment/catcalling are very common. It sucks. Yet I have seen people call the video 'racist,' say that the men yelling at her are only trying to 'start a conversation' or 'flirt.' This is nonsense and it has really shaken my confidence in this community. I think that many of the men here are terrified of yielding any ground to female concerns, of admitting that issues like this are serious.
My only real criticism of the video is more along the lines of "Duh, if a curvaceous white woman goes to a black neighborhood alone she's going to get catcalled." That's obvious to me because I live here, but I realize it might not be obvious to everyone so I think that the video has value.

I don't know exactly what the point of the video is, but casual catcalling is a constant thing for young women living in a city.
My young teenaged daughter gets catcalled so regularly it isn't even noteworthy to her. It makes my blood boil when we are out and she is with a friend or lagging behind, because it is very frequent. However if she is walking directly next to me/ clearly WITH me, they leave her alone.
I'm talking men from 16-60, ranging from "hey pretty girl" to really explicit things. If it doesn't bother you to see a random stranger being catcalled, it will if it's your middle school aged daughter.

I do not get mad when people turn and look. (Well I try not to, and I try to assume they do not realize how young she is.) She's tall and pretty and generally has a cheerful demeanor, I don't blame people for liking to see her, but the way some (shitty! abnormal!) adult humans feel entitled to comment on her body is a different story.

The interactions in the video should have to pass what I call "the hot guy test", which is, if it were a hot guy(tm) doing the so called cat calling would she find it offensive? If the answer is no then she can't really claim harassment.
Some of the stuff in the video is creepy(the guys who follow her), but someone saying hello or God bless you is harassment? I don't think so.

a person getting bothered 1% of the time is not minimal- that's 66 HOURS of harassment in a year's waking hours.
My school aged kid is walking around or on the transit system probably 500 hours in a year. That's five hours of consistent interference from strangers. That really doesn't sound minimal to me as her dad.

i am telling you as her dad i see it as not 1-5 times a year, more like 1-5 times a week. she dresses more or less like that woman in the video, leggings, boots, t-shirts, jeans. the whole point is that women or men should be able to walk down the street and not have strangers yelling at them.
I am not talking about stories i have heard, etc, i am talking about walking down the street in the city where i live, in actual reality, with her and her friend walking two paces ahead of me, getting little chirps of unwanted attention from adults. It infuriates me becuase this is my DAUGHTER, a kid, a child, who has enough problems in her life to overcome (family court, custody issues, crazy mom, etc) without getting yelled at by adults in cars who want to comment on her body.
It upsets me to see people who claim to be MRAs claiming this behaviour is acceptable or doesn't exist, because it sets our goals farther out of reach. Good, normal men do not act this way, so why are we excusing it? I am afraid it will continue to further the position that men aren't suitable caregivers/teachers/etc if we pretend that abnormal behaviour is acceptable. It isn't.
