set up a separate bank account and do not commingle a nickel of that money. If u give your ex $2 of that money, she can argue she's entitled to some of it.

Here is the deal. Inheritances aren't community property.

But you have to keep whatever inheritance you receive? Keep it separate and keep a paper trail that it was always separate. Don't comingle any funds or property from this inheritance with marital property.

She should talk to her estate planner on how to best achieve that. If she has a nice inheritance to leave behind, she should have an estate planner.

Talk to a lawyer.

It’s different between jurisdictions. Where I am, if the inheritance is kept completely separate (separate bank account and other conditions), it is not considered marital property.

IANAL but I am also in CT and I can tell you that CT divorce laws are some of the weirdest and most skewed in the country. Although the other responses here are all genuinely well intentioned, they are mostly incorrect.

CT is one of 2 states in the country where inheritances are on the table for divvying up regardless of its commingled or not. This is called an “all property” state. Full stop. That’s all you need to know.

The flip side of that coin is that all assets are “snapshotted” on the date you file. So all you need to do is file before your mom passes, and you would have saved your half of the inheritance from her evil hands. As long as you don’t do anything incredibly stupid like put it into a joint bank account.

But yeah, as others have suggested you should open a separate account just for those funds and don’t comingle in the slightest.

Basically as long as you keep it separate accounts it should be fine.
