As long as there is no temporary order issued by a judge, stating that you have to maintain the status quo and/or pay the bills, you do not need to pay them. Additionally, if you start doing this and it goes to court, the judge will likely order that the status quo be maintained during the divorce process. Therefore, by doing this, you are creating your own status quo. On the other hand, if you do not do it, there will be no status quo to maintain.

After separation, I deposited all my paychecks into my own account, from which I continued paying all the bills to sustain the house, cars, utilities, etc. Even though she works, for some weird reason she never paid any of the bills or contributed to the joint account... But she took from it. Weird. Anyway. So now, she has her 50% left in the joint account, and that was done so she no longer pays off her entire credit card balance each month from my money ~$5k... Yes $5k... On what? Fuck if I know. I was never allowed to see her credit card bill, Costco I guess.). So, I guess now she has to pay her own credit card bill. Great. This message is approved by my attorney. All rights reserved.

If you're making 60% of the combined income, then you should be paying 60% of the combined bills.

There’s something called epstein credits, not sure if it’s valid in Maryland. But that is, you’ll get credit at the end of the divorce for paying all of the bills so keep record of it. Say you divide all asset 50/50 then she’ll have to pay you what she owe during the time of separation not helping with the assets.

If it’s mutual and not contentious I’d recommend just pay for now and get credit back later. It’s the path of least resistance of course you should ask her to pay some if it’s difficult for you to manage.

Right now I pay for all things related to the home. I even sent her zelle request for a small fraction, haha. She’s paying the kids tuition and daycare though that’s a fraction of what I’m paying 6K versus 2.5K? So it’s kind of bullshit but whatever. Think long term not short term.

My lawyer told me that after the day of separation, my paycheck is my property. Im living in a motel, and she's in the house. I can't stop paying the mortgage because it's my biggest investment. I would like her to pay the utilities , she only gets about 1k a month from disability so I imagine that won't happen. I like how her disability is a plus for her but my VA disability gets added to my total income. In California here.

This might not be real popular on here, but I’ll give you my take: Give a little to get a lot.

If you are sure the divorce will be done in a couple of months and you can afford to pay those bills, go ahead and do it even though it hurts.

If that keeps her from going nuclear and forcing you into a hearing with lawyers on both sides where, odds are, a judge is probably going to tell you to keep paying them anyway since you make more than her. After that, you’ll fight over every little thing and cost yourself tens of thousands of dollars.

It’s like being in a sand trap in golf. Your only goal is to get out of the trap. Don’t try to get fancy with the shot.

My immediate first step is going to be to make sure she doesnt have access to any of my money. I already have a seperate account that she doesnt have access to, so ill put all my money there and give her half of every bill.

Once you file with the courts they will schedule a status conference where you will be instructed to continue paying the bills as you were during the marriage.

Going through the same thing. I added our total monthly income between the two of us and figured out the % of the total each of us being home. We added up our total monthly bills for the housing and the kids. If I bring home 60% of the income then I’m paying 60% of the household bills and she does the remaining 40%. The rest of our individual incomes we use as necessary, individually.

Why do you not have a lawyer? She had one. Are you trying to destroy your future on purpose. She is now your adversary . She sought legal advice to maximize her gains and minimize her losses. You should be thinking like that too.

What I did was just deposit half my share of the bills into account then she moved out and never raid anything else besides her half of mortgage
