Anyway, when I decided to get my own apartment, I made sure I had money set aside to buy cheap, yet decent furniture from Ikea and made sure it was delivered the same day I moved in. My bed (frame and mattress) and makeup vanity were the only things I brought from home. I was able to furnish my entire apartment for less than $800, give or take. It’s not that hard!!!

The thing is... to me there's a difference between low budget and just plain/bland. He couldn't buy a nice poster? A fake plant for a dollar? Literally anything that could make the room look nicer? Looking at it feels depressing.

Plus you can get fairy lights on clearance the day after christmas for 50 cents, or real bedsheets at walmart for $20.

And if this person was so desperately poor that they could not even afford proper sheets or a shelf, you would think that the first priority would be selling those consoles, games, and speakers. A new PS4 costs almost $300 and each game can cost anywhere between 20 and 60 USD. You don't need to play video games to unwind. Library books are free, running is free, and while drawing and writing aren't free, they only cost the pen and paper to do.

I'm not saying poor people can't have nice things, but when you're at a certain level of poverty, there's a sense of desperation that you obviously have to make ends meet, and this clearly isn't it. After my mother was widowed and our business went bankrupt, she sold nearly every gift my father ever gave her, including her wedding ring and band, because there simply wasn't any room for luxury at that point.

When I moved to my first solo apartment, where I'm still living, I didn't have a lot of furniture (just bought the essential appliances) or decor. For a week I also had the infamous mattress on the floor 😅 - I had a single one, and was waiting for my new double bed and mattress to be delivered.

The thing is, other than my boyfriend at the time, who I was already dating for a year and who helped me a lot with moving, I didn't invite anyone to my home until it was presentable. I could never have guests over if my house was not put together enough, especially people I don't know well - like a date, if it was the case.

To the guy (I assume) who responded that you cant have a plant in a basement... well actually you can. Pothos, spider plants, and some philodendrons will be OK in low light. They won't grow and get huge but they would happily survive in that window for a year lease if that's where they are. Plus if I came to this room and saw a little grow light on a plant it would show me that the owner CARES, and TRIES TO IMPROVE.

Completely aside from lack of furniture/decor, I don't see anyone addressing the basic hygiene deficiency of not cleaning his carpet. What is that stain that he couldn't be bothered to scrub it out? Soap and water should be available even in that rat hole, even if he can't afford a rug doctor rental for 30 bucks. And I don't have to judge someone else's standards to know that they don't meet mine. They are simply incompatible.
