So many female artist come off as pickmes in their lyrics. It’s across all genres too. A lot of indie songs are either framed that the relationship is quirky because the sad boi man cheats often or are comparing themselves to other girls in a way that seems to be trying to not be nlog but is. The song “last girl” by soccer mommy comes to mind.

I think it’s because of the sheer relatability of it. Most women can highly identify with being treated like ass by men and feeling inferior to other women.

It stems from insecurity I think. She’s the definition of a very try-hard cool girl. As someone who followed her a long, long, long time, she is most definitely a talented artist but also damn near a pathological liar that switches aspects of her identity depending on what’s considered quirky or interesting. I can’t follow her on SM because it’s unnerving as fuck.

It‘s the one thing I can‘t stand about SZA and sometimes I do wonder if it is part of marketing.

When her EP dropped the themes of her songs were less about side chicks etc... Then she drops her album which is a hit and it‘s all about that. Her image also changed drastically, she went from being a kind of quirky black girl to very sexual. Black women are often pushed into that corner, and I feel like we need more diverse images for black women, not just the sexy lovelorn woman. RnB loves a struggle love song and I‘m so over it, I don‘t care how good it sounds.

I really like the album but yeah some of the lyrics are ridiculous... I just try to look at it as art and know that it slaps (lol) and maybe adds another layer of sadness from my perspective knowing she’s reducing herself to “side chick” when she doesn’t need to be. If that makes sense. Kind of gives me sadness/nostalgia for when I was younger? But I can recognize I don’t want to live that way anymore. Also completely fair to not want to hear those sorts of lyrics though, of course

I feel this, but she says has actually talked about this in interviews and how her 20s were so dumb for her. She has this phrase that really stuck with me from a Genius interview which was: "I used to believe [dudes] liked me just cause they said so."

She used to be a Pick Me but is now processing and learning how to jump out of that mentality.Thats why she calls herself out on "Shirt" with the damn, bitch you like 30 line. The whole tone of these new songs sounds different. Good days and Shirt are all about curving shit you don't need in your life.

She seems insecure to me and that's why she makes pick-me songs. It just screams "I don't know my worth." In fact, a lot of strong female celebrities who claim they are the becons of female empowerment, stay with cheating men.
