I think she's trying to say she can't understand why it's ok for women to sing about doing pornified things for men, but she's been criticized for romanticizing prostitution and drug abuse and exploitative relationships.

Feminism is not for women who support the patriarchy, be it with being a passionate housewife or a walking sex-doll.

There doesn't have to be a place for them in the feminist fight, why should it. They are part of the problem.

Just because feminism is trendy now doesn't mean you can turn the movement into whatever you want to be part of it.

No one has ever said that she can’t be sad or talk about her relationships. In fact, more women should talk about emotional abuse so it becomes a part of more conversations. However, the way that she talks about it is the issue. She doesn’t denounce it or say how it changed her as a person or why it’s wrong, both in her songs or in real life. She just talks about how it feels so good and how all she wants is to be loved, etc. It’s fine if she doesn’t want to be an activist against abusive relationships but she shouldn’t walk around acting like she’s some kind of pioneer for women to talk about real issues when her set list includes songs like “Ultraviolence,” “Fucked My Way Up To The Top,” and “Video Games.” Just sing your songs and be quiet then. Her statement should’ve included something like “I’m just singing about my experiences, I’m not trying to influence people...” Something along those lines.

Instead, she blackballed herself in the music industry at least for a little bit (I don’t even know why she mentioned people by name) and just looks like a whiny, self-important, and ignorant artist overestimating how good her music really is.

I stan Lana as an artist. I mostly listen to her songs and she’s really talented lyrically and musically (the beats and musical instruments in her songs are ethereal), listen to Swan Song or God Knows I Tried as examples, they’re masterpieces. As for the pickme vibes in her songs, I ignore them. People aren’t one dimensional characters. And I don’t really care for her as a person or her opinions. Anyway, I’m glad she openly states she’s not a feminist. I know this sounds awful, but as a radfem (from North Africa), I really believe in gatekeeping. I know we should care for all women, and I do but we need to accept that some women are just beyond help and frankly have nothing valuable to offer other than drag our movement through the mud. The reason we now have liberal, porn-supporting, kink-enabler “feminists” is because we allowed pickmes in disguise with a bunch of buzzwords and Cool Girl complex to join the conversation so we don’t look “”discriminatory”” and “”exclusive””. Any movement that requires no criteria for its supporters gets watered down eventually, loses its meaning and the lines become blurred. It takes way more than singing about empowerment (for $$) to become a feminist. So we should be happy that not all women identify as feminists as they have nothing of substance to add anyway except twisting it so it suits their agenda: monetary gain or even just turning it into a quirky personality trait.

I've always had the strong impression that Lana has the IQ of a box of hair. I've never been able to take her seriously in any capacity.

It's not even the just the race thing which I don't actually think was the main intention behind her point (although questionable that she picked the first time in history that four women of colour a very marginalised group are topping the charts and choose to ignore many caucasian female equivalents), It's more the CHEEK of her as a "reluctant" heiress's pathetic attempt at the "oppression Olympics" Lana could have made her point without simultaneously demonstrating her internalised misogyny and prejudice by insinuating that others are " just as bad if not worse for singing about fucking and cheating etc as if that is ALL they sing about..." so basically she invalidated her whole victim narrative. She then doubled down when questioned on the very real issue of her younger, impressionable fans taking her lyrics as glamourizing domestic violence etc as "in reality, I am just a glamourous person singing about reality" THAT was the arrogant final nail in the coffin for me.

She is a trust fund brat who has also made money of the "urban sound" and vintage aesthetic mixed in with a dose of pumped-up lips, little girl/pseudo-Latin exotic erotica and the "street cred: of "urban music" without living through the struggle that comes with it. I was a fan but not any more. She is an idiot.

I like lana the most and since it’s all about empowering and free of expression she have full rights to do that she wants and rejects that’s hurts her. I never saw someone hating beyonce who claimed be a feminist but constantly forgives her unfaithful husband. Lana don’t jump in feminist hype train as another singers who sings about same boyfriends.
