Wow wtf. This really gets under my skin. I’m a linguist and I work internationally primarily. This dude’s attitude toward her pronunciation is absolutely insidious. No one is the arbiter of how any language is pronounced. Imagine if Shakespeare heard Americans, or modern brits for that matter, talk, it would be very hard to communicate. Language changes. It’s time and place oriented. Also, dudes so first world elitist. If he heard a British girl say aluminium, he would almost certainly not roll his eyes bc he prob would just be like, ok that’s how they pronounce it. He feels free to be so douchey bc Africa. Like Ugandans are English speakers. That’s just how they say things it’s not your place to “teach” her dickhead. God his face is just so fucking punchable. Also I meet a lot of white men like this when I work in the developing world. I wish they’d just stay home or learn some goddamn manners.

This infuriated me. She was obviously raised learning English the English/British way being from a former British colony, plus speaks her own native language, I'm assuming. This idiot is probably not even aware of the differences between British and American English accents/pronunciation or slang words.

Also, aren't hippos native to a lot of African countries, so she's probably pronouncing that word more correctly than him, as far as we know.

As a Hispanic, my first high school boyfriend was teaching me how to pronounce words in a more "American " way so he won't be embarrassed for me in public, I despise his attitude because all I remember is how I felt like a failure every day while he made fun of me with his while lacross bros.
