Situational Awareness training will be one of your best training classes.

Second, follow it with some Women’s Self-Defense training.

Having the tools won’t keep you safe, if you do not know How to avoid the situation, or How to use the tools effectively without them being taken from you.

Knowledge weighs nothing and can’t be taken from you.

She Defense (https://www.shopshedefense.com/) is a woman-owned small business with self-defense keychains, I think they have an ‘all in one’ stun gun too. You definitely have to check state/country laws though, because some places won’t allow pepper spray to be shipped through.

The self defense tactic for women I feel no one talks about: you need to be able to RUN and move freely. And that may imply changes on your clothing depending on the style.

I used to do the whole knife and pepper spray thing, but I invested in a Glock 43x 9mm. It is Glock’s most compact handgun and it has little kickback so it is great to shoot. Get a conceal carry license if needed. I realize this isn’t what most people consider, but it’s worth it. There are many resources online and even workers at gun shops can show you gun basics to start. I feel so much safer with a handgun and gun knowledge.

I have a tactical pen ('stabber' 😀) that I keep in my hand any time I'm out by myself, going to/from my car, etc. I know how to hold and use it, and while I won't say it would necessarily be easy (depending on the situation), it could kill someone with a single blow. At minimum, it could rupture a testicle, take out an eye... stop someone in their tracks, especially someone who isn't expecting that kind of resistance.

Friendly reminder to check your local laws before purchasing anything for self defense. Some of these items would be illegal to carry for the purpose of defense in some areas.

I have trained (and taught women and activist groups) a very violent style of Japanese jiu-jitsu that is heavily focused on self-defense for 17 years, I strongly advise you not to carry a knife. They often end up used against the person carrying it. Pepper sprays, tasers, etc. Are much better options. Unless you’re a martial experts (and even then, I was taught and shown how badly things can escalate for anyone—you never get attacked in a perfect situation when you aren’t tired, scared etc.), your best solution to most confrontations is temporarily disabling your attacker &/or running away. That is true for men and women. If they want your wallet/phone, throw it far and run in the opposite direction, they are never worth you being stabbed.

I also recommend watching YouTube videos on strangles and grabs for example, practice with a buddy.

Edit: also learn to raise your voice and to see people who might scream at you as just talking at a louder volume. A lot of violence is psychological power, not physical. When I learnt knife defenses, you were told to occasionally scream “DROP IT!” When you had control of them. the person never expects it and it’s pretty effective at surprising them into submission.

I keep a baton in my car and have several guns at home. I like to hike alone and always open carry my .9mm when I do. Completely legal in my state too btw.
