While I agree with all the comments here saying this should be the bare minimum, I would like to celebrate what he said because it was said at a time when saying this was deeply unpopular. Someone saying this in 2020, in the era of Me Too and feminism? That's the minimum. But this man did the right thing and put his money where his mouth was decades ago, when doing so wasn't going to give him any praise, and doing the right thing even when you know it's difficult is a true sign of an alpha and a HVM

Yeah, they did cast Monica for Spectre, but she's on the screen only for like 5 minutes and after first 30 minutes of the movie her character is totally dropped and forgotten and Bond's main love interest is some 30 year old actress, 17 years younger than Daniel Craig at that time 🙄 ugh I hated this movie

Yes yes yes!!! There’s so many sexy and sensual older women like Sophia Loren, Monica Belluci, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfiefer etc etc etc. and they could add so much depth to the characters too. I’m sick of this shit. I’m not even in that age category, but it’s always pissed me off ever since I was a teen.

Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn... there’s so many! The only reason they aren’t seen as that sexy seductress is because they’re never put in those roles! Start normalising it, and it will become the norm. People act like we aren’t brainwashed by what we see day in and day out, but we are. Even people who have knowledge of what goes on are impacted. People who believe they make up their own minds really are quite naive.

tbh, i was bothered by this being on the front page and everyone celebrating him like a hero. couldn't put my finger on it at first, but just realized that it's because this should be just basic decency. normal. the damn basic standard!
don't get me wrong, i think this man is great (at least from what i've heard of him), but it's super sad that not being a creep is worth being celebrated. kudos to him for quitting though, especially back then, different times and such.

It shouldn't even have been on him to quit; it should've been on production to cast older love interests for him. The casting was built around Bond anyway, so it's not like they had to cast those young actresses and then whoever played Bond must fit into the cast.

That's why having Monica Belucci as Daniel Craigs love interest was so new. They're actually a similar age?! And minus the whole creepy advances of James Bond, the similar age plays off each other much better. It's interesting that the Bond movies (but not Fleming's novels) did portray an interest between Bond and a woman older than he was - Lois Maxwell (Miss Moneypenny) was older than George Lazenby and Sean Connery (she was the same age as Roger Moore).
She was replaced as "too old" after "A View To A Kill" (1985), when she was 58. For comparison, the actor who played Q appeared in all Bond movies up to The World Is Not Enough (he was 85). While there appeared to be plans to replace him (his "heir presumptive" was introduced in the film), these plans were justified (it was the last Bond film made in his lifetime). Lois was still active professionally when The World Is Not Enough was filmed (retired after a cancer diagnosis), and 2 more Bond films were made between her retirement and her death.

honestly more male actors need to turn down roles where they are intimate with women that are dramatically younger than them. too many guys watch these movies and see the younger woman as a trophy and it normalizes the large age gap, when it should be making it creepy and weird. the media perpetuates sexism and age gaps like this

I always had a diffuse hate for James Bond movies and as a kid I could not identify the reason other than that every JB movie is extremely boring.
Today I know why: James Bond is honestly the single movie series that is explicitly tailored for misogynist men. A rich old and hairy man in a suit who never shuts up once and thinks it’s cool to gamble and drink alcohol is the main character in always the same story, while somehow his bare presence seems to make all ridiculously good looking young women lose their minds and feel attracted to his ugly ass. I never saw a JB movie where a woman has an interesting role.
James Bond impersonates everything misogynist men believe in and the intersection with SJW people is practically zero, that’s why people especially lost their minds when the discussion was about a female James Bond.
I however would love a female or black James Bond, because nobody of the typical clientele would watch the movies anymore and they would stop being produced finally.
