A few years ago, I read an article written by a poly woman. Reading the article left me exhausted. Her lifestyle sounded so tiresome. One man is more than enough. Two? No thank you.

The poly pushers always talk about monogamy as if we all secretly want multiple partners but are forced to stay with one person at proverbial gunpoint by, idk, the church?(they usually cite Christianity as the reason we’re all “forced” into monogamy). I am not religious. I like monogamy. I don’t want to share my partner not do I want more than one. The thought of either of us sleeping with someone else nauseates me. Polyamory seems best suited for people who are bad at picking faithful partners, who’ve given up on ever finding one and have arrived at the “whatever, fuck it” point.

This is the most awkwardly written thing I've ever read. I mean, yeah, you can question a concept or a social construct, but if you're going to interrogate it, that's means you expect it to answer back. Like, what?

I don't know any poly people who are happy or well-adjusted. Polyamory overwhelmingly attracts abusers and emotionally unavailable people who don't know how to have a real relationship. All the poly couples I know end up getting divorced or are somehow still together despite abuse, addiction, and other crippling issues.

Of course if you say this, you're the bad guy. Meanwhile nobody in the poly community cares how creepy they are or how they disrespect other people's boundaries. Multiple girlfriends and I have horror stories about poly couples creeping on us and refusing to hear our "no."

Poly people can say those people were anomalies all they like, but it's the norm. I tried giving it the benefit of the doubt but every poly community I've met has been a shit show and it's so bad that I can't even be friends with poly people because they inevitably get creepy.

Frankly... My biggest critique of polyamory in the current social context is how it's been manipulated by colonialism to most benefit mediocre white men.

Hearing my community elders share stories handed down from pre-contact, as well as analyses from Naomi Sayers on marriage/family law and Dr. Kim Tallbear on polyamory, indicate to me that the monogamy-based nuclear family is very much a social construct that was forced on my and my kin's nations in an effort to harm and undermine our societies. Monogamy has been used to assimilate us along with other inumerable tactics of violence. However, do I think modern-day polyamory is the solution? No. The solution is looking at how devalued women, two-spirit/trans/GNC people are in comparison to men. To me, that is the actual issue. And I wish The Cut would talk about that instead of promoting polyamory under the face of yet another privileged white man.
