Thing about the patriarchy argument has always been incorrect. It's an essentialization of men as one. Even though the men on top, who dictate society, have no interest at all in uplifting men below them. Knowing men's intrasexual competition, it should be the opposite, in fact. For the very little sexual instincts & behaviors influence these successful men's decisions.

Everyday men do not benefit from societal structures. Rich people, powerful people, do. But it's always the same topic we talk about here, isn't it? The failure of the left concerning men's problems, instead relegating them as wanting to win a zero-sum game with women's rights.

i love that we talk about death gap, but its also one of those things a kin to wage gap, but the contrast to wage gap is that death gap contributes to men's shorter life expectancy. The sad thing is is that I havent seen any productive conversation behind unionization and anti-capitalism in men's rights advocacy which is one of the solutions to the death gap.

Another WIP! So please let me know of any notes, errors or feedback!

When we talk about ‘structural advantages’ or ‘systemic discrimination’, the finger points one way, and one way only. Yes, it’s men and boys who are exclusively privileged, politically advantaged and cruising through life on easy mode.

Often this discussion is riddled with vague and yet highly dramatic language, that too often fails to identify actual systems, laws, policies or any governmental structures at all.

So to correct this, I’ve taken four areas that I believe are critical to an American’s well being; education, health, work and safety, and highlighted the loped sided structural advantages in each, and who they are hurting, or helping.

Because It’s easy to fall back to catch phrases about 'who built the system' (yes it’s mostly men), but isn’t the more pertinent question – who is the systemic is build for?

I'll never understand how people cannot seem to grasp the difference between "who built a system" and "how the system functions in practice."

Sure - if a certain group builds a system, you can guess that it might be built to their benefit. Except the systems in the USA in particular (and a lot of the rest of the world) weren't really built "by men," so much as they were built by "the elite ruling class" who just happened to historically be men. They were built to benefit that class, and any "advantage" men had was mainly for their own convenience, not because they wanted to help other men.

Also, systems change over time.

In the USA for example, the advantages men used to have in structural terms - like before women could vote, or when men had greater rights over their children, or women were discriminated against in hiring - are pretty much all gone, replaced with massive cultural and even legal means of giving advantages to women instead.

It doesn't matter who built the system, at least not that much.

What matters is who the system currently works to the advantage of.

In the USA, it works to the disadvantage of the average man, while benefiting the ruling class and women.

Rambling aside, I thought this slide setup was quite well put together. Following slides with data with information about relevant structural advantages/disadvantages related to that data is a good way to get your point across.

Are our laws written by men? They're passed by elected politicians, who are mostly men. But the real power isn't in the elected legislators. The lobbyists on gender issues are mostly feminist organisations. The people who write the laws and try to get them passed are mostly feminist. The voters are mostly women.

The Tender Years Doctrine was introduced by proto feminist activists. The Women's Educational Equity Act and similar legislation is all created by feminists. Shared parenting legislation has no more powerful or consistent foe than the National Organisation of Women. The sentencing gap is at least partly caused by the efforts of feminists to redirect women into more rehabilitative programmes, and away from custodial sentences, to close women's prisons down, to introduce laws against "femicide" and other laws aimed at formalising the pre-existing bias in favour of women in the justice system. The provision of domestic violence services is something Women's Aid and similar feminist groups have consistently lobbied to keep gendered, and under control of feminist organisations. Mary Koss wrote the definition of rape that keeps most male victims from being counted by the FBI and CDC, and she's a prominent feminist activist and scholar, with similar things having happened in the UK, India, Israel, Nepal, &c..

So who really built this system? Patriarchy? "Patriarchy hurts men too"? No. Feminism.

I have heard the argument that the reason why we don't have these agencies for men is the same reason why we don't have national white history month in America. In my gut I feel like this is a bad comparison but I don't know what to say when I hear this argument. Any advice?

I'm not sure that phrase "our laws are written by men" is quite correct; though it's important to point out that having the same gender doesn't make men in power actually help men w/o power, usually at all. Other than that, thanks for a good post.
