What's the difference between a left-wing male advocate (or simply male advocate) and an MRA?

The ideological difference is that the LWMA implies that they are advocating for men's rights form a leftwing perspective. MRA implies political neutrality despite the fact that MRAs are often lumped in with the rightwing, a common misconception, in attempts to discredit them.

I think the difference is specifically in a more left-wing leaning in questions not related to gender, like free healthcare, etc.

But I think this group is especially important because sexists like to pretend the MRA movement is somehow right wing and conservative (=evil) , and sexism against men is somehow left wing and progressive (=good). This group shows things aren't that simple.

Personal perspective (i.e. not trying to define it outside of that): I believe in advocating for equality and equity wherever data shows that it is lacking. That is regardless of sex, gender, orientation, race, etc. It turns out that men are shit on a lot and that is ignored. It's also true that there are still areas where women lack equity. I believe we should be advocating across the board on all of it. As far as the left-wing part, there's a significant amount of politics, values, and ideology that fall far outside of this area that can be called liberal, progressive, left wing, leftist, etc. (i.e. left of center). I tend to hold to most of those left of center perspectives, at least to some degree. I also prefer to live a very egalitarian life, excepting a few small personal areas that are done with discussion and consent of all parties. I still hold respect for women as part of my views, and don't lump all of them into a corner on the basis of bad actors. In all of that, I think LWMA fits my views.

As for just MRAs. This is a little dicier and more opinion based (i.e. may not be entirely accurate), but my view tends to see them not as being for equality and living egalitarian lives, but one of not really holding any respect for women. Their advocacy is solely for men, and often in very negative and toxic ways. It is expressed as a zero sum game. I often see them more as a right wing counterpart (not always) to large segments of feminists. Just like feminists though, there are varying levels of beliefs and ideology.

I do think the distinction is meaningful.

I think you could say that LWMAs are MRAs in some respects, but I think lacking the distinction it is harmful to the position and positive effect of LWMAs.

For me, it’s to communicate the point that men’s rights are not a far right position, and are not antithetical to left wing politics.

And to attempt to view egalitarianism through a left wing lens that is not feminism.

It’s an uphill battle, but I’ve never shied away from doing what’s right.

My personal perspective is that words should say what they mean. So “men’s rights” sensu stricto should be about legal and moral rights, about reforming the laws and policies.

I also think there is a useful distinction between “Activist”, “Advocate”, and “Supporter” (or “Ally”).

Men’s versus male is a minor quibble, generally “men’s” supporters would also be boys’ supporters, though there are some issues that affect adults or children differently.

Aside from the definitional approach to “Rights Activist” and “Male Advocate” and other terms, there is MensRights the Reddit sub distinct from MRAs generally in society.

I follow both subs. Realistically MRA and LWMA are both about men’s issues generally and don’t distinguish between rights-based versus other aspects. MRA will have more gender essentialists and laissez-faire economics than somewhere with an explicitly left-wing title.

You also need to remember that r/ MensLib is a mis-named pit of gynarchy, MGTOW got banned, and RedPill has an obsession with weightlifting, so MensRights has to absorb a broader set of views.

No difference. Just different phrases to talk about activism for males.
Activism for females is called Feminism.
Activism for males is called men’s activism (or MRA, or male advocacy).
I honestly don’t know how/if a “left wing” male advocate is different from male advocates in general.

I think that the comment by @EmpathGenesis nails the difference in definition.

I feel like the difference at least here instead of r/MensRights is that many of the discussions focus on the left wing side of politics. I also believe that we try our best to keep the discussions more intellectually stimulating as well.

In my opinion, MRA is a broad spectrum of ideology with regard to gender. Right wing MRA aims to advocate for institutions and policies that restore the traditional role and benefit of men. They support rigid gender role while criticizing the concurrent society for failing to pay proper honor, recognition, and benefits that men deserve.

On the left side, people advocate for men by eliminating gender roles, eliminating traditional stereotypes and bias against men, and building an equal and uniformed rule.

the men's rights movement is attached to any specific political party. Left-wing male advocates would just be men's rights advocates that are also left leaning. How is this even a question?

This sub was started as a response to a pattern in MRA spaces (such as /r/MensRights).

To advocate for men, you need to challenge a lot of feminist rhetoric. This rhetoric includes:

making negative generalisations about men
advocating for policies which are biased against men
promoting the idea that sexism is only ever against women and anything that looks like sexism against men is actually just privilege backfiring

Unfortunately, creating a space where feminism can be challenged tends to invite people who hate feminism for other reasons. These spaces get taken over by traditionalists. Their issue with feminism is that it challenges gender roles. They promote traditional masculinity.

The male gender role is the root of most men's issues. The problem with feminism isn't that it challenges this gender role. It is that it only pretends to challenge it, while leveraging and reinforcing it.

This space identifies itself clearly as left-wing in recognition of the fact that the foundation of the male advocacy here is progressive, not traditionalist.

For me, the difference is that LWMAs are largely liberal and progressive on most social and economic issues while MRAs can span a much wider range of political platforms, including conservatives, neoliberals, and postliberals. I also feel that LWMAs are more trustworthy and committed to actual change while MRAs are more self-centered or simply acting like they want change when they simply want control.

These are just how I see them.
