Seriously? They teach order of mathematical operations pretty early on. It doesn't even matter what you do, as long as it's consistent and everyone is aware what order you're using.

Many people are retarded and don't know math. So I suppose that they would think it's 16. Must have gone no further than HS general math.

They barely understand fractions, but they sure seem to be able to sign for subprime mortgages.

This math puzzle (if you can really call it that... it's child's play) appeared on Twitter days ago, and EVERYONE solved it right away. Literally everyone (Hint: BIDMAS).

Then the DailyMail jumped on the bandwagon with an article about a female "math professor" solving it. She may have solved it, but:

i) She wasn't the first person to solve it.

ii) She didn't solve it because she is a woman.

iii) She didn't solve it because she is a math professor.

iv) She solved it, days after everyone else in the world solved it, because even a 10 year old could solve it.

This article is basically handing out a participation trophy.

The right answer is 16, but it's obscure because of the notation, I'll explain myself

8/2(2+2) =/= 8/(2(2+2))

let's consider what we have here

8 / 2 (2+2) has the form A/B·C so the question is...

Is A being divided by B·C, or is A/B being multiplied by C afterwards? the second one, so...

A/(B·C) =/= A/B·C and since product is distributive, A/B·C = A·C/B, the second form isn't ambiguous

8/2(2+2) = 8(2+2)/2 = 8·4/2 = 16

EDIT - As an example, 8/(2(2+2)) = 8/(2·4) = 8/8 = 1 and 8/(2·4) is different than 8/2·4

You see here the importance of notation. As a general rule, if an operation isn't specified, usually there a product between the numbers (for example, 3x = 3·x)

In my day, it was BOMDAS. Brackets, Of (exponents), Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. Some students also knew it as BODMAS.

PEMDAS and BEDMAS I've never heard of (though it's the same as the 2 above), but this is messed up if they're teaching conflicting theory.

The next Mars Rover will crash because someone did DM instead of MD.

The problem is not in the proper form.

It could either be 8 / (2*(2+2)) or (2+2)*8/2.

It’s a poorly written out equation.

I interpret it as this fraction:

8 / 2(2+2)

Which would be 1.

But I can see how it some people may interpret it as

“8 divided by 2 multiplied by the sum of 2 plus 2”

Which would be 16.

They should express it as a fraction, not with the “divided by” symbol.
