What is the goal of this club?

The fact is that the MRM has a "bad name" in the harts and minds of most people who identify as feminist. Now, I think it's not deserved. I think that most of those people have never spent any kind of significant time trying to understand what the views of the MRM is. But the fact is that using the MRM name will, in the minds of those people, paint you with the same brush.

The people tho do not care to read the truth about what the MRM is are unlikely to even consider listening to anything you have to say.

So the question is, what is your goal. Do you seek to inform the uninformed, do you want actual, tangible change? If your goal is to improve the visibility of the mens rights movement then you can go with your current name. but you should know there will be many people who outright refuse to listen to you because of it.

First, when dealing with feminists ALWAYS BE RECORDING.

Second, have a calm conversation with her. Ask why she doesn't think having a name so similar to Men's Rights Advocacy is a bad thing. Have her spell it out. Either she will go off on a rant about hating men (and your recording it) or she does have legitimate reasons. She may think the club is a good idea but the naming will dissuade other students from joining. She very likely has some serious misconceptions about men's rights, and you could help her understand.

Just don't go in there with a "Fuck Off" additute because she will react to the additute more than your words if you do.

You might name it in a way that acknowledges the egalitarian goals of the MRM instead. However, just take care that the activities and discussions of the club don't get derailed by those seeking to inject feminism.

If you're not making a "hardcore feminist" feel at least a little bit uncomfortable, you're doing something wrong. The fact that she's worried it might bring up associations to the MRM is the first clue that you should probably be making a few associations to the MRM.

Besides, all PR is good PR, making your society visible is just going to draw in more people. Considering that fact that men's groups are so controversial at the moment I think it's extra fitting to make a bit of a scene and provoke a bit (in a dignified way though, not through, god forbid, something like occupying a university building.)

If you play your cards right and just hold talks on men's issues every now and then, the hysterical reactions you're likely to get from feminists will be worth thousands of dollars in advertising so long as you get it on tape and put it on youtube.

Seriously, I would just keep the name because fuck her. If she wants to think that the MRAM is mysoginistic, good for her, because it really isnt, and maybe your club can help her realize that she didnt have good perspective.

Incorporate the college into the name. Also she your advisory she doesn't run the club. what you want is a non-involved advisory that is in no way hands on. I was the treasure of two clubs in college. the best advisors are the one that are on paper only.

the principle of the matter troubles me deeply and i'm tempted to say you should use the original name.

but you may end up denied many opportunities to speak to people about mens' issues and raise awareness if you use a name that, unjustly or not, is a sore spot with so many people. they will approach you with a bias you might not be able to conquer in spite of how well-prepared you may be.

at the end of the day it is far more important that these issues be brought to light and begin to enter the public consciousness than it is important the name you and i use for people fighting those issues gets cleared.

a movement like this simply will get slammed and spit on, it's the nature of the beast. if we stop to wipe off all the dirt we'll forget to make actual progress, and then what kind of movement would we be?

Is there any chance you could get an other adviser? One who does not announce loudly and proudly to the world that she's a bigot?

I wouldn't advise telling her this, of course, but if there is some way you can ask for a new adviser, giving the vaguest reason you can, or no reason at all, you should look into it.

Whats so wrong about it? If you want to make a mens rights advocacy group name it as such and let the clubs actions define the club. Also MRAs should advice feminists clubs, not the other way around.

Ask her what she would have done if, as a student, she started the Women & Girls Rights Advocacy club, and her student adviser waned her to change the name because it might be associated with the women's rights movement.

That said, it doesn't roll of the tongue very well. If I were you, I'd go with the Men and Boys Advocacy Group - not Club, since that word is an unnecessary bullseye.

The one term that's really worked is adding "human" to the title. Radical feminists hate to acknowledge that men are human beings, and they really couldn't stand those "men's rights are human rights" posters.

I'd probably agree with them. Like it or not, a lot of people have been taught that "MRA" means men who want to ban abortion and force women to be subservient to them.

I'm not a creative person... but why not drop the word "Rights" from the name of the club? It isn't a strictly necessary word, and the name would still show you're on the side of men and boys who have been wronged and need people on their side.

Personally, I'd ask her to define what that means to her. It could very well mean that to her those words mean "I take gender equality very seriously and don't tolerate any anti-equality nonsense and excuses", and she could be a really good ally and friend. Or it could mean... well... what "hardcore feminist" too often means, which is someone who blames men for every problem they encounter. But right now, you don't know.
