The known facts of this case from nearly 20 years ago proved definitively that these young men from Duke University were falsely accused. I actually did a bit of a deep dive into the story right after Mangum's not-very-stunning admission of perjury, to see if there was an angle worth writing about it in a follow-up review. However, it really only involved pretty standard legal and police malpractice, and only one thing jumped out at me as a possible source of a post on this subject: the name of William D. Cohan.

So who is William D. Cohan you might ask? Well, it's probably not shocking to find that there were academics and media – and still are!^* – who stubbornly believed Mangum's story (or one of the many she spun) more than a decade after the young men were declared innocent. Cohan was/is noteworthy for being one of the most vocal apologists for Mangum's lies, because he took a bit of a different avenue than anyone else. He wrote a 614-page book to supposedly capture the "innumerable subtleties" of the case. However, his magnum opus was panned by everyone who knew anything about the case. The overly long book got numerous facts wrong, and served only as a dishonest attempt to raise doubts about the innocence of the falsely accused young men (for example, Cohan's main criticism of the students was that they were able to purchase competent lawyers to defend themselves). I don't need to go into all the details though, because Cohan himself summarized his book's "explosive new revelations" about the case in an archived Vanity Fair article that has definitely not aged well:

For the first time, Mangum shared what she believed happened on the night of March 13, 2006. Cooper, the state attorney general, never charged her with making false accusations in the lacrosse case; she told me she still believed she had been sexually assaulted.

It's so helpful when these ideologues feel free to state their honest opinions in writing for everyone to see. And if that isn't crazy enough, Cohan actually ends this article from 2016 by stating that:

We’ll never know what really happened in that that bathroom 10 years ago...

Except that every rational human being on the planet already knew back then that nothing of what Mangum claimed ever happened in that bathroom. And now that this convicted murderer has admitted to her lies, perhaps even Cohan realizes this too (though I wouldn't hold my breath on him admitting to being wrong).

* Note: another interesting thing I uncovered during my deep dive is that there remain a few conspiracy-minded commenters out there that still believe the accused men on the Duke Lacrosse team are guilty. Yes, even after Mangum confessed they still think the young men are rapists. These conspiracies appear to be coming from academic, media, or "wominist"-associated circles, though it's tough to pinpoint their source given that no one is putting their name and reputation behind this. However, in my research I did run across claims that Mangum's confession itself was false, because: "a racist and sexist system forced her into the position of having to lie about the rape in order to increase her chances of getting parole for her murder charge". Yes, I'm serious. People actually believe this...or are willing to say they believe such nonsense. This is your brain on group identity politics. My advice is to stay far away from this mental toxin and judge each individual situation on its own merits. Let the evidence sway you as to the truth or falsehood of any claims or explanations about important events in the world, and don't get trapped in this irrational group-focused ideology.

While on the face, this case appears to be about false rape allegations. However, this case is really about a shoty piss poor investigation and prosecutorial misconduct which includes the over zealous prosecutor running for reelection and mass hysteria these false allegations caused on the duke campus. Also let us not forget all of the dule factuality that didn't even wait for the investigation to conclude before crucifying not just these 3 players but the entire duke lax team.

The prosecutor was disbarred and the "woman' who falsely accused these guys is currently serving life for murder .

Yes the 3 guys live's were turned upside down but they made it through

This case also shows that if you have the money you can beat false allegations and a stacked prosecution.

Imagine if these kids parents didn't have the money for private lawyers, DNA analysts , they would still be rotting in jail.

This is why I am a firm believer that if you are ever falsely accused, you should sue the shit out of your accuser.

I feel like if men who's lives were affected by these things could get reparations for those crimes that it'll get more people willing to crack down on this.

Awarding people potential loss by defamation due to accusation will empty the pockets of everyone who supports behavior like this. Being painted a bad person saps the soul from people and unfortunately because of gender expectations and disposition, men get far less to no concern to being painted as something they're not. Even by people who like them, they'll churn out terms like creepy or stalker as if it's cute and has some double meaning.

If nothing different happens, nothing will change.
