Actually, this ruling simply forces men to subsidize women's hair cuts. The regulation does not say that the services provided must be equal, just that the prices must be equal. There is no reason to believe that anyone- women or anyone else- views this as a standardization of service. Men's prices will have to rise. Women's will fall, but the differential in care, attention, and time will remain in women's 'favor.'

So uhm. Just bringing some perspective as a Dane here. Usually when you get a haircut in Denmark you get a women's cut or a men's cut. The women's cut is usually a lot more expensive for obvious reasons, but it also discriminate on women based on their gender and not on the length of their hair. This is an attempt to press equality by forcing the haircutters(?) to change their pricing set-up to something akin to "long hair: 500 DKR, short hair 200 DKR, etc.". I do not find it especially bad as it is an elimination of gender inequality.

This is also because in Denmark it is not allowed to charge customers differently because of gender. Even then it is still a problem in night clubs for example where the clubs try to attract girls by lowering the entry price for them. It only remains, however, because people do not report it.

Of course, no doubt about it, this is very much a first world problem kind of thing.

This is the other side of the coin of for instance car insurance not being prized differently based on gender. Not a bad thing. The hairdressers will probably adjust by charging by time or by style of hair (crewcut for men and women will have the same price) while a full blown 80's mullet(?) a la Joey Tempest/Bonnie Tyler will be the same price regardless of the customers gender.

I can only assume that regulations like that will put a lot of hairdressers out of business as they will only have the option to decrease prices for women instead of increase prices for men.

If they try to increase prices, men will just go somewhere else, possibly a barber who specialized in only men's haircuts and charges based on that skillset. I'm sure women would be perfectly free to go to a barber instead of a hairdresser but I don't know how pleased they would be with only having the option of a man's hair style. Who knows, maybe they too will grow to like the benefits of a low maintenance haircut.

Also women's clothing is more expensive on average.

Of course it's more elaborate and personalized in general but still. Equality.

Oh but men have to pay more for food on average owing to a greater caloric need (on average). So that needs to be equalized. Same with drinking: men require far more alcohol to get to the same level of intoxication as women, so liquor should be subsidized by women to make it cheaper for men.

Also men don't live as long as women so their benefits should come earlier and be slightly higher than women's so the average amount awarded is the same.

Equality.

Oh and men tend to be taller, which makes them less comfy on trains/buses/planes so either larger seats should be provided to men at the same cost or they should get a discount.

Oh the work we have to do to achieve full gender equality. . .

I think it would likely be better to charge for the service rather than the gender of the person recieving the service. I don't like this step to make all services charged the same but I suppose hair dressers can get around it by offering a more specified range of cuts.

Like 'designer styling - 20 dkk, short back and sides - 10 dkk, trim with scissors 5 dkk', or something along those lines. The idea that every female hair cut takes longer than a guys simply isn't true.

Or they could do a timed version, charge you per ten min block or whatever.

This is just silly. They should just charge based on time and let that be that. Then people can be as picky as they want, have as long hair as they want, come as often as they want, and be charged an equitable fee.
