I have no issue with strong female characters. I do have a problem with badly-written ideological pandering.

[–]albert1357 34 points35 points36 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree. Look at characters that are written properly and aren't pandering shitcakes. The main character from Horizon Zero Dawn is a woman, but that isn't her shtick. She's a strong female character, but she doesn't use "being a female" as a crutch to appear likable. She's written as an actual character, and that's why she's a good character. This is the problem with a lot of stuff in Marvel and TV shows; the studio starts with a female and builds a character around that, instead of building a complete character and then deciding what the character's sex is. If you build any character using a pandering archetype as a crutch, and if it falls - and it will fall -, the character implodes and has no value left. Shows like Supergirl fall short because their selling point is her being a woman first, superhero second. A character like Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop (that's all that came to mind right now, apologies) is memorable because she's a character first, with personality and desires, and doesn't rely on the fact that she's a woman to be a self sustaining character. Sure, there's jokes that relate to her being a female, but that's secondary to her character.

Marvel is both shoving shit out to balance a scale that shouldn't exist and also building characters completely wrong, maybe in an attempt to get these people to stop complaining, but who knows. That's my two cents on the situation.

And that's DC.

[–]Archibald_Andino 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Producers are in a tough spot with female characters that don't meet the feminists stamp of approval, thus the proliferation of the ridiculous indestructible female hero.

[–]Qapiojg 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Badly written ideological pandering from a character that has been arbitrarily race/gender swapped from a classic hero for the sake of it

[–][deleted] 84 points85 points86 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

We should call this the Ghostbusters excuse.

The product failed because it was poorly written, polarising, and at times seemed to go out of its way to alienate at least 50% of the target audience the readers and viewers are unworthy of it.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 49 points50 points51 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

"...we had a lot of fresh, new, exciting ideas..."

LOL! See, this is why Marvel is fucked. They think making Thor a woman and Ms Marvel a Muslim Pakistani is being "fresh, new and exciting!" As for the Marvel guy, sounds to me like he's bashing us deplorables for not buying his warmed over shit. Fact is, the market doesn't object to diversity, it objects to characters having their sex or race changed just to fit in with the wishes of the deranged PC thugs running Marvel. You want to give Luke Cage and Storm a big push? Go for it, nobody is stopping you.

[–]Lethn 27 points28 points29 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

If people don't want strong female characters then how do they explain the popularity of Anime? Like it or not, it's gotten pretty popular in the west and it's filled with strong female characters and the reason it works is because the creators aren't afraid to show strong female characters that are also attractive/caring in their own unique ways who guess what? Actually care about their men in the end and try their best to help them when they're in trouble.

Feminists want all their 'strong' characters to be perpetual victims just like them and be fuck ugly, obese and whiny princesses and since the primary audience of this type of thing will be men it's absolutely no wonder it immediately flopped.

Good fucking riddance, this is just the free market at work and they're bitching about having to fight on a level playing field. When I look at these kind of high profile attempts to shove ideologies down peoples' throats I feel most sorry for the artists who actually have to make all this shit. I know the hours of work they'll have put in to one texture or page only to have it ruined by some shitty director or designer that doesn't give a fuck about what they're doing.

At the very least if they're going to push this propaganda they could make it believable, but they can't even do that because they just don't care about anything else.

Why create Sailor Moon? Just turn all the Dragon Ball Z characters into women!

Dragon Ovary Z

[–]andejoh 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

There are quite a few women / girls who are into anime as well. Maybe for the same reasons.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah if they had created a new character that was more diverse and it was well written no one would care.

SJW thinking requires being hilariously out of touch.

[–]Thomjones 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Seriously, squirrel girl is mega popular as is spider Gwen and they're original characters. Its not fucking hard.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thing is, doing a diversity palette swap is easy.

That's probably why they do it instead. Who needs to put forth a little effort when you can put forth none and shame your critics all while feeling righteous?

[–]Qapiojg 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In fact, I find luke cage to be alright despite the obvious pandering in the show. They'll be fine as long as they make it appealing to both audiences

[–]Singulaire 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Heck, the market will even swallow the pandering race/sex changes if you put out good stories. Ms. Marvel was well-received because people liked the stories and they didn't focus on how she's a Muslim and diversity is important- they focused on how she's a fangirl who got superpowers. Miles Morales Spider-Man was well-received because the stories were emotional and Miles didn't harangue people about how black lives matter.

On the other hand, Mockingbird died on the vine because it was terribly written, terribly drawn, and couldn't stopped jerking itself off about feminism and how oppressed women are for long enough to have an actual plot. Captain Marvel is doing terribly because there's a bajillion titles about Carol Danvers that turned her into Minority Report. Many other titles are suffering because their stories are constantly interrupted to serve the bi-annual crossover event that nobody is excited about anymore.

[–]LucifersHammerr 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Find me a man who doesn't love Alien, Ridley Scott's sci-fi film featuring a very "strong and independent" female lead in Sigorney Weaver. That's one example, there are thousands more.

People don't like it when SJW's artificially insert hamfisted feminist politics into their art. That is all.

[–]i-like-tea 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You nailed it. Speaking of hamfisted political characters, I find that these characters often feel really artificial. Their character is defined by their gender/race/sexuality instead of that being a part of a nuanced and well fleshed out character. No wonder people lose interest.

[–]LucifersHammerr 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Fans don't reject "strong female leads," they just oppose obvious politicking.

[–]derpylord143 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

I think what needs conveying about Ripley though (if we want "strong" characters like her) is that, her being female is part of her character, but its in fact only a small part of her character. you know she is weaker than her male peers, but she doesn't try to be stronger, she tries to be smarter... that's what made her a great character. She was ingenious, tenacious, stubborn, and so much more, than merely "a woman". Similarly, she had flaws... she couldn't do everything her male peers could do, she could do some, but not all. That made a memorable character, because you see her relying on her strengths... that means something when you aren't good at everything like some characters that only have superficial flaws (though here atleast some characters ask "should i" not "can i" which is in itself interesting). If you have a character that is great at everything, then honestly, relying on your strengths doesn't make a good character, there's no growth. It sounds weird, but the flaws of a character and a human are what makes them who they are. if you are flawed at everything, crap at everything, then anything you do is an achievement, for you, maybe not in comparison to others, but it will demonstrate growth and everyone loves the underdog, an example from anime days was Jack from MÄR, he is pathetically weak at first, but he grows, he has a character, he is interesting. Ripley captures this well, she is not good at everything, things fail, she has to work for it all. At least if what i remember is accurate anyway, she develops problems, between films they create them, and it worked, she was never "perfect" she always remained... human. Thats what made ripley...

[–]LucifersHammerr 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Agree with you entirely. It SUCKS when a female character is simply all awesome all the time; the male characters have to work to become eg Jedis, and so should the women!

[–]DeathArrow007 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Jedi get paid more, obviously...

Or Metroid (excluding the one title that shall remain unmentioned).

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Never played it. Can't say I wouldn't like it, but its not the kind of game I buy since the games started being 3d (I did play action and adventure games back in pixelized 8 and 16 bit, but that was for lack of choice).

More of a JRPG fan (both turn-based and action), with a slight hint of racing sometimes. I also never played first/third person shooters and no sport games after the original NES (Soccer, Blades of Steel, 10 yard fight that were on a multi-game cartridge). I can't tell you about Dark Souls, Persona, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Uncharted or anything by Nintendo after 64 bit.

My gaming budget is/was rather limited, and after PS1, just going for RPGs was enough to drain it. I'd have maybe tried other games if I had access to them for free, but I find emulation too complicated after zsnes to have bothered.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

she's 100 yo and still hot but that was a woman not a red haired twat

[–]Rasalom72 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

As a comic collector for decades I can say that all the times they toss out shit new "progressive" characters, I just dump the title. When the circle around back to the character that made the title work, I pick it back up. It's especially egregious when the new version of that character is a woman/ minority...

Green Lantern was always Hal Jordan. When DC decided to make others GL, it just didn't work, and they kept coming back to Hal.

Ironman is always Tony Stark. Rhody picked it up for a while, but right at the start the armor was built for him around his character, so War Machine (and it still wasn't as good as Ironman)..Now with the new Ironheart, I don't even read the title. If this Riri is so fucking smart, why didn't she build her own super armor from scratch instead of ripping off tech from Stark? (I don't know if they explained it or not, just saying why toss her in an Ironman book instead of giving her her own title.

[–]chocoboat 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

She doesn't sound like that bad of a character. A genius girl inspired by Iron Man to build a suit of her own, it works and he takes notice of her. She has her own background and her own personality, it's not like they just said "Tony Stark's a woman now".

I don't think many people would complain except that her introduction comes in the middle of an effort to replace so many other iconic characters with non-white or female versions of the character. X-23 has been around over a decade and has been popular. And I like Miles Morales, he's a pretty interesting character, I just wish they made him his own hero instead of being a replacement for Spider-man. But after female Thor and all this other SJW garbage that made fans sick of seeing this progressive agenda everywhere, no one's interested in seeing another character like Ironheart regardless of whether she's well written or not.

[–]Rasalom72 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So in the marvel cannon, she is inspired by Ironman... great... give her her own title, don't co-op Ironman and just make her a female version.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

so you don't like black characters got it. a lot of characters are based on non white stories or fables. and yet they work because they cater to an all white audience. whites did not like black males to have a positive role model at all including the fantasy realm so we just took over sports.

[–]Rasalom72 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Where did I say I didn't like black characters? I have no problem with black characters where the fact that he's black is secondary to being an interesting character. Except that's not how most of them are written. Their "blackness" is their defining characteristic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

so if him being black was not the issue then write him as white but color him black. wonder how that would work out

[–]Rasalom72 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So he's Obama?

People don't hate diversity. They hate diversity for div ersity's sake.

[–]fsphoenix 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Does that mean they'll stop randomly turning iconic characters female and then crowing about diversity?

[–]fengpi 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People don't want anymore strong female characters

That's not true at all, and there were plenty of them when I was collecting X-Men in the 90s. The difference between then and now is, back then, Psylocke didn't make me feel bad about admiring her ass and Jubilee wasn't majoring in Women's Studies.

Maybe work on subtlety next time, Marvel.

[–]MattClark0995 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Maybe Marvel's sales are declining because they are pandering to feminists and constantly bashing men (they even use the word "mansplaining" a few times).

If you're a young man and want to read shit like this then I feel sorry for you.

[–]roharareddit 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

The reason for this is simple: GIRLS DO NOT BUY COMIC BOOKS!

Sure, there are a few geeky girls who read comics and that's great. But boys have been and always will be the ones who read fictional stories about strong heroes and nasty villains who fight desperate battles with each other with the fate of the world in the balance. Boys do not identify with female characters. They just don't. And its not because they hate girls its because they are.........well............BOYS.

Why the producers of media, video games and comics listen to these stupid feminists and SJWs despite their senses and loose untold millions of dollars is beyond me.

[–]SchalaZeal01 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

The reason for this is simple: GIRLS DO NOT BUY COMIC BOOKS!

Not the reason.

It's exactly what /u/LucifersHammerr said:

Find me a man who doesn't love Alien, Ridley Scott's sci-fi film featuring a very "strong and independent" female lead in Sigorney Weaver. That's one example, there are thousands more.

People don't like it when SJW's artificially insert hamfisted feminist politics into their art. That is all.

People don't mind female characters, they mind shallow pandering. Most people, both boys and girls, men and women, are for equality and diversity. But geeks (the audience for comic books) don't care about shallow pandering generally, regardless of their sex. They quickly figure it's like bad publicity, and cheapens the actual content.

You know what turns off core gamers too? Stuff like Nintendo pandering to an audience that is fleeting (kids who go on to not be gamers and their parents) instead of actual people interested in games. Which means the bar for good content can be lowered (make cheap bad games, like before the videogame crash of 1982 or 1983), since those customers don't know anything about games, they just play as a fad (because other kids play) or to pass time. I prefer the bar to be raised than lowered.

[–]roharareddit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Okay, you pointed out that men and boys like female sci-fi and comic book characters but you didn't do anything to refute my claim that it is predominantly boys and men who buy comic books and not girls.

Sigourney Weaver with a tiny set of panties and a shortly cropped tank top slipping into a space suit while trembling in fear before an alien space creature with a slimy proboscis sticking out of it's mouth? Oh yea, I mean, damn!

Linda Carter in the seventies? Shit yea!

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

refute my claim that it is predominantly boys and men who buy comic books and not girls.

Don't have to, its irrelevant. It's NOT the reason for the reaction Marvel is seeing, not one bit.

[–]roharareddit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Don't have to, its irrelevant.

You don't have to? You just state something without corroborating it therefore it must be true?

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's just not the reason, demonstrably so. It's a geek thing, not a gender thing. The rejection isn't misogyny or cooties-syndrome, it's being allergic to SJW bullshit.

Source: Female geek and never cared about SJW bullshit. Also never really thought gender mattered in what people like, or why I like people (pansexual, thinking outside the box, geek and proud, asperger).

[–]roharareddit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very well then. N need to take any more issue with this. I will respect your opinion. Cheers.

[–]ExpendableOne 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Marvel pandering to extreme sjw politics is a major part of the problem but, the reality of it is, women also just don't buy comics that much either. People like to live in this delusion where women are 50% of the "gaming/comic/nerd community", but this is just not the case and has never been the case. Women are generally not into these things because they associate it with men/masculinity(and therefore not something they should be into) and because they associated it with nerdy/unmasculine men(and therefore something to be shunned and ridiculed). There is often even a very negative predisposition towards the medium itself from women, who then tend to favour other mediums such as books or music. Most women also benefit from a lot of strong social and romantic privileges that play into these biases.

A big reason why Marvel is pandering to SJW's is because they believe that this is what women want and, therefore, what will attract more women to comics. But, really, that's just not how it works. Until we fix the issue with the way women essentially treat men, or more specifically nerdy men, women will be negatively predisposed towards comics no matter what Marvel prints.

A big reason why Marvel is pandering to SJW's is because they believe that this is what women want and, therefore, what will attract more women to comics.

That's not what a majority of geek women want, and they should focus on those geek women. Women who prefer buying 50 pairs of shoes and are addicted to telereality should be their concern as much as the beer and sports guys are to them (not at all).

People who are normative in their gender stuff are totally a lost cause for anything geeky that is more than shallow 'maybe I watch this one movie a year' thing.

I feel like you're overlooking a key point with this

But boys have been and always will be the ones who read fictional stories about strong heroes and nasty villains who fight desperate battles with each other with the fate of the world in the balance. Boys do not identify with female characters. They just don't.

Don't you think that fact that girls do not identify with male characters either? And that maybe they would buy comics books because liking "fictional stories about strong heroes and nasty villains who fight desperate battles with each other with the fate of the world in the balance." has nothing to do with gender?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that Marvel is right in this context. I think they're losing sales because they keep rehashing the same stories and same characters in a world where there are no real stakes or consequences, and people are just getting tired of it. Remaking the Iron Man storyline with a different gender/race does not change the fact that it's not new or interesting for readers. And trying mad spins like making Captain America a Nazi also feels like a weak attempt to change things up.

[–]Vomikron359 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I would think the message behind making captain America a Nazi is clear. The president's literally Hitler didn't you hear? I certainly did all fucking election. So obviously captain America is a Nazi. Hmm.

[–]i-like-tea 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought it was "We're desperate to get more sales - look at this unbelievable plot twist!". Clickbait connotations fully intentional.

If it was not spread over so many fronts I might agree with it being a fluke, but between games, comic books, movies, TV series, it's a unified attack on male culture.

[–]roharareddit 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't you think that fact that girls do not identify with male characters either?

Um, yes. That's the converse of the exact point I was making.

And that maybe they would buy comics books because liking "fictional stories about strong heroes and nasty villains who fight desperate battles with each other with the fate of the world in the balance." has nothing to do with gender?

Fantasizing about risking all to be the hero of the day is a decidedly masculine trait. True, many girls and women exhibit it but it is indeed masculine.

This is ridiculous. Comic book fans DO want more strong female characters. But they don't want the feminist SJW political crap that usually surrounds such characters in the real world.

Story matters. Leave the politics for the politicians.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People don't want to be insulted and pandered to by SJW political correctness, and outright misandry.

If they can't figure that out, then they can expect the future to be increasingly bleak.

[–]Thomjones 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No the problem is you replace established icons with shitty diverse versions while having the icon exit the scene the worst way possible. Who the fuck would give the new iron man or whatever a chance after you just fucked him in the ass to get some lady in?? They don't bother making new characters. And when a kid watching the marvel movies wants to read about those specific characters, they can't. I mean anybody would tell you that's horrible cross promotion. Man I love cap america, let me get his comic book.... What, where is it??

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

so the nerds have spoken with their money and said we will not pay for this shit. but it is mens faults. but but the nerd girls. LMMFAO nerds fell for this Trojan horse hook line and nothing but blueballs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I love strong female characters. I don't mind changing character gender or race, as long as you do it well ( I'd be down for a female doctor or a Donald glover spider man because I have faith that they would use the opportunity to add new flavor to the characters)

But if you're just gonna give us some poorly written pandering gimmick like they did with female Thor or the Ghostbusters reboot, then you can fuck right off.

[–]noturtles -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't see what this has to do with men's rights.

[–]Neolions 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–]noturtles 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

male centric hobby

What the fuck is that even supposed to mean? I certainly don't give a shit who else likes the same things I like, all I care about is that I like those things. I really don't see the point in trying to gatekeep something like this.

Look, all I'm saying is that lately MRAs have been just as caught up in this type of shit that doesn't really matter as the tumblrinas. I literally don't care if there are good or bad attempts to make strong female leads.

It's them who make it seem regressive, in a "those are conservative anti-women people (and mostly men is implied by the accusation of not liking women), that's why strong female heroes don't do well" instead of a "those are geeks, and they hate fake virtue signaling bullshit, they want real rounded characters who aren't defined by their sex or race".

I think you're generalizing a bit much

[–]Neolions 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you can't see that there is way more men then woman in a comic shop than you must be blind.

[–]noturtles 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can see that, but why do you think that is?

Great cop-out. In other words, you have no idea how it is relevant and don't want to let on that you're got behind this without understanding what the point is. The entire article solely discusses readership preferences.

  1. Why are new female and diverse characters less appreciated? The article claims that the marketing system was not optimal to promoting these new characters.

  2. Why are the older heroes gaining a surge of popularity? Could it have something to do with the decade of film adaptations as Marvel builds its Cinematic Universe like a metropolitan skyline?

Or do you guys actually think that Marvel started the diversity thing "because feminism", and are bailing on it "because feminism failed"?

[–]SchalaZeal01 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Why are new female and diverse characters less appreciated?

You mean why people didn't rush to buy female Thor comics?

New characters would be fine, but trying to rebrand older characters as another gender or race is just pandering. Like Ghostbusters 2016 movie.

Why are the older heroes gaining a surge of popularity? Could it have something to do with the decade of film adaptations as Marvel builds its Cinematic Universe like a metropolitan skyline?

The movies could help, but its mostly because they have a rich story and weren't created or modified as pure pandering.

Or do you guys actually think that Marvel started the diversity thing "because feminism", and are bailing on it "because feminism failed"?

They started it because people are favorable to equality, but they misunderstood what this meant. Comics readers are not SJWs, they don't want virtue signaling. They're for equality, not shallow pandering.

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Rebranding is not new to comic books. And last year's Ghostbusters: Who Ya Gonna Call? isn't a case of rebranded characters. So I don't see the relevance here.

[–]SchalaZeal01 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Ghostbuster's movie flop was totally marketed as "we made them all girls because virtue signaling", and told those who didn't like it as misogynists. Way to alienate the people who would actually buy your product. It's Gamergate all over again, where gaming magazines proclaimed 'gamers are dead'.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

That's marketing. How is this a men's rights issue?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You are every thing that is wrong in the world... don't get me wrong, It's just as sick when men go and look for things to bitch about when it comes to women but from your post history this is literally all you do.

On top of that you are either actually ignorant or you are willfully ignorant when it comes to your wildly misinterpretation and misrepresentation of other people's views on issues that matter to them.

If your all for empowering women then that's fine but for god sakes you will never achieve anything by simply tearing down men. The only thing you will gain with this shitty behaviour is alienating more men and giving them a reason to dismiss women's opinion out of hand because they are so used to this kind of ballbusting that eventually they just stop listening at all.

You are against MRA's ? Awesome. Keep up the good work because you are the reason they exist.

You evidently did not read my post history.

On top of that you are either actually ignorant or you are willfully ignorant when it comes to your wildly misinterpretation and misrepresentation of other people's views on issues that matter to them.

Misleading statement. I did not understand (and still don't) how this article relates to men's rights - and thus I asked. The answer I got did not resolve my confusion, hence still asking. As for the generality of your statement, I can't even begin to address.

If your all for empowering women then that's fine but for god sakes you will never achieve anything by simply tearing down men.

You're**

And how is my question tearing down men? It's a valid question.

The only thing you will gain with this shitty behaviour is alienating more men and giving them a reason to dismiss women's opinion out of hand because they are so used to this kind of ballbusting that eventually they just stop listening at all.

Mountain, meet mole-hill. If asking how an article is relevant equates to "alienating" men with "shitty behaviour", I have to wonder what behaviour you're expecting.

Submissiveness?

You are against MRA's ? Awesome. Keep up the good work because you are the reason they exist.

Heh. I'm sure I'm not. But it's cute that you take my simple query to be a deadly threat to your penisness.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was talking about your post history as a whole. It is pretty solidly anti male and as a frequent poster in r/againstmras or whatever it's called I'm pretty sure your post history speaks for itself.

See it looks to me like it's you hobby to refute and tear down men at every chance.

Threats to penis is not even a issue beyond your childish attempts to once again confuse the issue and make someone feel small.

I am simply pointing out that you are a sad person that seems to enjoy arguing just because it's against a man.

Find a new hobby.

[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Alright...I'll spell it out for you.

This is indicative of another attack on media or a media property that has a core demographic that is primarily male by feminist-aligned SJWs. And like what happened in the video game industry and what is happening in SF/Fantasy literature; in the end, the only result is that the genre's social and economic base is broken. The only reason that the SJWs go after these genres is because "it's something else that men are into and therefore should be invaded and ruined." This is nothing more than more encroachment into and denial of "male spaces."

Feminists are pretty much dictating what goes on in any given male space in American society. Sports, music, geek media...it doesn't matter; if feminist women don't like what's going on, they will protest and complain until they force men to change it.

Let's go back to the Ghostbusters movie. Anyone who gave that movie a bad review was attacked as being a misogynist. How is that not a "men's rights" issue? And the exact thing is being said here in not so many words in regards to the sales of Marvel's "virtue-painted" comic titles.

"Wah. The male fans aren't buying our SJW-aligned titles that spend every other panel bashing men. They must be misogynists and racists. Wah."

But...you know that already, don't you? This is just more arguing in bad faith in an attempt to dismantle an argument from within. But I don't mind...this is just sharpening me up against bullshit arguments for when the real fight begins. Thanks to folks like you, I'll be ready to rip apart weak-ass arguments like a John Woo hero guns down mooks.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Male space? Sports, music and geek media are not male spaces. They never were. I don't know where you got that from.

Yyyyyeah, no thanks. I know that insults are the order of the day, so I'm going to spare myself that.

[–]kragshot 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I will take ownership for the way that I wrote that passage. The statement of feminists dictating and controlling male spaces and the declaration of male spaces including sports and geek media were two separate thoughts and should have been discussed separately.

Yes, the demographics for Sports and Geek Media are primarily men with the exception of SF/Fantasy film and literature. I included music in that mistakenly.

But with the above being said, and with that being the only comment you had available to make, does this mean that you acknowledge and accept my reasoning behind this article being relevant to the movement?

[–]kragshot 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or do you guys actually think that Marvel started the diversity thing "because feminism", and are bailing on it "because feminism failed"?

A rather simplistic way of putting it, but yes.

Marvel execs thought that all of this virtue signaling was going to equal increased sales and now that they see that it isn't, they are going to try and go back to what used to work. But what they still haven't figured out is that they may not get their core customer base back.

What they failed to realize is that the SJW crowd went after comics for the sake of control; nothing else. They wanted to be able to say that "we changed this media into what we said it should be." This wasn't about the concerns of an audience that was genuinely invested in a product. This was about social manipulation; nothing more, nothing less. And the idiots over at Marvel kowtowed to the SJWs not realizing that SJWs had no genuine investment in the genre and no intention of buying any of these "revised" titles that they were badgered into changing.

There's nothing wrong with courting a new demographic for your product but you never do it at the expense of your core demographic. That is the mistake that Marvel made and they are paying for it in spades...but they are still only paying on the interest. They have yet to even touch the principal of this "debt."

And the really sad part of all of this is that it's the same thing in every instance of these "attacks" on fan-based media. The most productive solution for introducing "diversity" into fan-based products is to create fresh products that embody the new ideas and let the audience that wants to embrace these new, diverse products show their love with sales. But these "virtue bullies" never want that.

"Create new media to reflect the changes we want to see? Why should we have to do that? You should just change what you like into what we want because we said so."

That is why Marvel sales are plummeting. That is why games like "Sunset" are not selling. That is why the literary SF fanbase is fractured and steadily eroding. The people who are forcing these broken changes into fan-based media have no genuine investment in the genres that they are attacking.
