I am a university student in Canada, and my campus has a number of posters around reminding people that a person who is intoxicated cannot legally consent to sex. I believe I posted one to this subreddit before. These are all well and good in my mind, because I feel like they can provide education. Three years ago when I first moved onto this campus, I had never considered the legal stance on sex while intoxicated. From browsing this subreddit for some time, I have concluded that the general feeling here is that those laws need to be reviewed, but at least the posters let you know what the potential consequences could be.

However, lately, some posters have been going up around campus that say things to the effect of "we shouldn't teach women not to go down dark alleys, we should teach men not to rape them." Setting aside the uni-sexual victim and uni-sexual perpetrator, it seems to me that this is encouraging people not to take responsibility for their actions. My city is in the top 5 in the country for murders per capita. Nobody says teach people not to murder, they say don't go out at night alone.

I am not trying to be an apologist with this post, ultimately, it is a rapist's decision to commit the crime, and that is why they are punished harshly by society. But why is it that if I get mugged, I'm told I shouldn't have been in that part of town at night, and that's alright to say, but if someone gets raped, it isn't politically correct to say that they should avoid the 'bad' parts of town?

Edit Unfortunately, I am in the middle of exams, and don't have time to reply to each of you, or at least a significant number thereof. I hope that many of you see this followup. I just want to thank all of you for the lively debate and intelligent comments. While I am unable to personalize a response to each of you, I would like you to know that I did indeed read everything that was posted, and will continue to do so if more replies come in. Thanks again!
