There’s no good reason to single out this sub, one of the few relatively safe spaces for men’s rights online that hasn’t been shut down (and even this one is heavily policed and shadow banned). The content I’ve seen on this sub isn’t anywhere close to as offensive as what’s posted all over the rest of Reddit and other social media platforms.

The subs that encourage blatant misandry—with the backing of mods who promote double standards and believe women are a protected category but men are not—are far worse than what I’ve read here. It’s men who are banned from even participating in certain subs solely because of their gender (or for participating in this sub), and men who are disproportionately blamed and shamed all over Reddit. Yet I don’t see too much condemnation or even recognition of this on those other subs.

And most of the misandry I’ve seen in real life comes from mainstream media, politicians, policies, laws, courts, and other institutions that are hardly under Russia’s thumb.

All of these things are more concerning to me and outweigh any alleged Russian disinformation on this particular sub.

With the number of bots, ideologically-compromised admins, censorious policies, etc, causing much worse problems on Reddit, it's strange to me that "fighting Russian disinformation" is suddenly the priority anywhere on this platform.

I've read through many of your examples, and I don't find them all that compelling, either as broadly effective tactics to sow disagreement and discontent in another country, or even as being true descriptions of historical events in some cases. Take for example Linda Sarsour and the Women's March. You suggest that the criticisms against her over her views on Israel were Russian disinformation that "crippled" the Women's March organization. Here's your argument in full:

But the Russian PR teams realized that one attack worked better than the rest: They accused its co-founder, Arab American Linda Sarsour, of being an antisemite. Over the next 18 months, at least 152 Russian accounts regularly attacked Sarsour. That may not seem like many accounts, but it worked: They drove the Women's March movement into disarray and eventually crippled the organization.

However, this omits information that is very important in judging if this "worked" as well as claimed. First off, Republicans and various right-wing media were already attacking Sarsour using this narrative for many years, and they were some of the loudest of her detractors during the actual event in 2018. The co-founder of the Women's March, Teresa Shook, also called for Sarsour to step down from the WM over her controversial positions/statements around these issues. None of those people are Russian. So the implication that the "152 Russian accounts" were what alone caused Sarsour's PR issues regarding "antisemitism" is not a well-founded claim, given how much other pressure was happening from non-Russian sources.

Also, the idea that this one widespread narrative is what "crippled" the WM organization is far from compelling. There were many other controversies that hurt the WM, not the least of which was having a convicted murderer and torturer – Donna Hylton – headline the event, plus Madonna making threats of violence against the White House so extreme that I don't even feel comfortable repeating them. It also emerged that the organization's leaders had ties to extreme figures. The whole thing was full of extreme people, extremist views, and controversial political ties, and as such it was practically guaranteed to fall apart once the tiniest of lights was shone upon its members.

In the case of the one thread about forced conscription that got removed from this sub, well, when it is an obvious bad-faith lie I can perhaps understand it being removed. However, people in the comment section were having a reasonably healthy debate over whether that particular video was real or not, and from what I can read it was not clear one way or the other at the time of removal what it was showing. All I can repeat is my own comment from the thread: a reasonable person should be able to oppose injustice wherever it exists, whether in the aggression and greed of Russia's attacks or the treatment of its own male citizens by Ukraine (including the laws preventing men from leaving Ukraine, other country's embassies not allowing Ukrainian men to seek political asylum, etc). And that is where censorship unfortunately always ends up in these types of situations: by silencing fair and nuanced criticism out of an irrational need to promote a false sense of "unity".

If anyone is worried about the disinformation about international politics, Tim Marshall, who has worked with the BBC, Sky, The Times and The Guardian, wrote "Prisoners of Geography" that explains quite well the dynamics and causes behind conflicts in places such as Ukraine and Russia and helps you avoid falling for propaganda and manipulation.

Just fyi, it is very accessible compared to Brzezinski’s or Kissinger’s "World Order" btw

Why is only Russian disinformation something that you think should be spotlighted?

Furthermore, "disinformation" literally means that someone is intentionally being deceptive, as opposed to "misinformation" which denotes that someone was simply wrong. How do you know that you removed disinformation as opposed to misinformation?

While I can see the argument for removing posts by literal paid Kremlin agents, that position is much less solid when we're talking about normal people being wrong. I don't think that mods should remove posts just for being wrong.

Furthermore, why are you mods qualified to determine 1) what is correct and what is false, and 2) whether something is disinformation vs misinformation?

Are you also removing pro-Ukraine or pro-Israel or pro-American information that's wrong? And are you equally adept at spotting that kind of wrong information as you are at spotting pro-Russian wrong information? Have all you mods done sufficient research on false pro-Ukraine, pro-Israel and pro-American narratives?

Isn't the upvote / downvote system something that already works to address bad information?
