Yep, people respond to incentives. Knowing she'll get the house, the kids, child support and alimony in a no-fault divorce changes the power dynamic of the marriage leading to a policy of appeasement for the husband -- it's "cheaper to keep her". This leads to emasculation and the woman being in control of the marriage, which only increases her resentment towards her partner -- even feminists like men who are in charge. At this point divorce is almost inevitable, and the woman has only to gain from it.

A few days ago, female supremacist and Internet Troll PZ Myers took to task /u/nigglereddit for his audacity in weighing his options whether to get divorced or not.

The kicker is in the comments, where someone suggests that he divorce his useless wife (throughout, she’s faceless and with no personality at all — just another female, weeping). He says he’d rather not, and like the typical egocentric twit, goes on to explain why and removes all doubt that he’s a creep.

I’d be very unlikely to get custody of the wee one, and the damage it would do to her would be awful, I’m sure you agree. We don’t fight and our home life is stable, so I think divorce would likely make things a lot worse for her.

I don’t stand to gain much from a divorce and I’d lose a great deal. Besides, I’m nearly forty and I have a two year old. A wild life of drinking and dating isn’t likely even if we do separate!

His response is to consider it, and to weigh the utility of a divorce. I hope this woman read this and realizes that part of her problem is that she’s married to a loveless shit with no sense of empathy, who really doesn’t love her, and gets out while she can.

But what does actual scientific study tell us?

Women weigh the utility of divorce all of the time. I am sure PZ would read that article and tell us how empowerful and liberating and righteous and ethical and atheistplus all of that is.

IIRC the divorce rates are lower in states where joint custody is the starting point/more likely.

Highlights from the article:

In Virginia, for example, only 6 percent of the divorce cases showed violence as a cause for the divorce.

Remember that 6% of total cases, not just women.

While the wives' feelings of being "too good" for their less financially or socially successful husbands was cited in 20 percent of the divorce cases studied

Trying to find the original study, haven't found anything outside the abstract.

Divorce is pure evil in the eyes of men. My uncle's ex took him for a ride for YEARS before she'd sign divorce papers, the marriage died few years after the birth of their son. The woman was a spiteful bitch but before they divorced by grandparents tried to keep it together. They got a car, money for house payments, clothes. This is Canada tho and our justice system and family courts suck as much as the USA's.

The USA should move to a chinese style system, splits 50/50 unless things were bought pre-marriage then the person who bought something like a house gets to keep it.

Marriage is just a means to an ends for some women. They just want the money, the house and the kids...all they need a man for is to acquire those things through hard work and at the right moment she will file for divorce and get everything without so much as lifting a finger.

I don't understand how this type of slavery is not considered a human rights violation by the UN or something.

Not always true. I filed and knew and expected to not get custody for divorce. Side note: I filed for divorce because of the physical and verbal abuse I received from the monster(wife) I divorced. And, I have lived a happy life since then(marriage was from 1991-2000).

Alimony is a big incentive to divorce for the lower wage earner. Unfortunately the bigger wage earner often gets stuck with a lifetime commitment to support the other ex-spouse even though they are fully capable of supporting themselves. The higher wager earner is given a life sentence from which there is no escape. Congratulations to Massachusetts for ending the atrocious indefinite alimony. Please support the other 14 states who are trying to follow suit. Divorce should be done in away which enables both parties to truly separate and not a lifetime of financial entanglement and legal wrangling, being unable to retire, and in which only attorneys win.

The partner receiving the children would be the one more likely to file for divorce in an effort to help them, no? I wonder, do you think those who end abusive relationships are more likely to be the abused one? Perhaps those waiting in line at a hotdog stand are also more likely to be hungry than those who aren't.

It's pretty logical for the more responsible and caring partner to attempt to help their children.
