so , usually an ex is someone you have vetted out. After all, you entered into a relationship with this person. This person meets the looks, personality, etc. No relationship is perfect and barring abusiveness, infidelity.. this person was probably " the one".

Whatever ended the relationship (because people constantly change, whether they feel bored, moving to another countries, most people post break up will fear the unknown and getting back out there. When people say you will definitely find someone better than your ex, in a world of 8 billions people what they are forgetting is how difficult it is to do the vetting process again.

Not only do you have the basis of your ex to compare the new person to, not to mention your criteria probably changed / much stricter the older you get, you also have to be on the same page in terms of sexually chemistry, values, compatibility, friends, family, culture..

With all that said, I don't believe most people can find someone better than their ex, especially if their break up with their ex was not like 5 years ago. If anything I feel they will eventually settle. All the good people are either snatched up pretty quickly, or aren't quite ready to settle (working on themselves). The older crowd seem to have more baggage.
