Oh, I don't doubt it. I was doing a roleplay with some of my old college buddies, many of whom have certainly adopted socialist tenets. The other guy, a brilliant, warm person, was explaining how he was using machine learning to try and give him a good idea of what index funds to invest in for his retirement.
I wasn't sure how deeply it went, but it was pretty clear that ideology wasn't far back in this guy's mind, as it was the second time during one of our online sessions that we'd mentioned something about investing, and he piped up that it was "immoral" and that investing in these funds made him "a dirtbag." I mean, he wasn't that mean about it, since it was his friend, but... it wasn't very nice, and it was spoken with an air of "I'm right and if you disagree with me you are aiding and abetting evil," which is bullshit.
So yeah, I know you'd do that, which is why I hope to good God that you people lose.

I don't think you're evil for adapting to an evil system. That makes you smart, whether other commits want to admit it or not. I want to put an end to it, not to you.
[–]the_calibre_cat0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
That's nice, but I don't think it's an evil system, and while I suspect that you are motivated by your earnest convictions and desire to do good, I'm sorry - I think the system you advocate is so counter to human nature that it would make all of us materially poorer, and it would not eliminate hierarchy but would instead consolidate the existing hierarchy into a smaller but more powerful hierarchy in the political class.
That doesn't even touch upon the contempt for free speech vibes that I get from your side, I wouldn't put struggle sessions beyond reddit's socialists/communists.
[–]Contradict-- 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I don't think it's an evil system
Even when productivity goes up, wages effectively go down continually as the cost of living moves past them. Not only does this system need a lower class, but they're completely forsaken in lieu of profit.
I think the system you advocate is so counter to human nature
What do you know about human nature past the nature of humans within this system?
it would make all of us materially poorer
How? It's based off of work. Work makes wealth.

Even when productivity goes up, wages effectively go down continually as the cost of living moves past them.
This doesn't surprise me. Government has been piling regulations on for decades, it floors me that the left gets to pull this "muh Reagan deregulated everything and that's why everything is bad" when the reality is that regulation hasn't slowed down one fucking bit - it's actually increased in speed and severity according to numerous metrics.
Not only does this system need a lower class...
Every system "needs" a lower class, or rather, there will never not be a class of people who's output is deemed to be of lesser value than everyone else's. You just think you can force the rest of us to value what it is they produce, and you can't.
...but they're completely forsaken in lieu of profit.
Case in point. You want to force me to believe that flipping a fucking burger is on par with being an emergency medical response technician. Flipping burgers isn't a bad job, especially for someone starting out, but past a certain point man... it's not "society's" fault you're flipping burgers (except for the extent to which government steals wealth from society and subsequently squanders it) and struggling to get by.
It's your fault, and the consequences are having a shitty life, not having enough money to get by, etc. I'm a white male who's folks saved up for him to go to college. The last thing I wanted to do fresh out of high school, was more fucking school, but I went because it's what I was supposed to do and there was a lot of family pressure to do it. Turns out that's the wrong reason to go to college, and I still didn't want to go while I was there, so I fucked around instead of doing my coursework and got myself into a lot of debt and struggled in the job market (as you do, without a degree).
That wasn't society's fault. That was mine. It thus, isn't society's debt to repay. It is mine. Because shit isn't free.
I don't accept Marx's axiom that humans are products of the material, political, and social system they exist in. I think we are a mix of inherently selfish and inherently altruistic tendencies, with a heavy bias towards the selfish generally - which is why capitalism works.
...it would make all of us materially poorer... How? It's based off of work. Work makes wealth.
...it would make all of us materially poorer...
It denies people the right to the fruits of their labor by denying their claims of ownership to things. That "society" gets to be the committee that decides the difference between what is "personal property" and what is "private property" isn't exactly reassuring, and through the abolition of private property, there's no incentive to shoulder risk to start up a productive enterprise. All productive enterprises would become public property, which is just laughable out the door - public institutions are routinely incompetently managed, wasteful, and inefficient owing to the lack of consumer pressure and competition (they get paid regardless of how good/shitty a job they do), and corruption is endemic to them.
Every society that protects private property claims is prosperous and free. Every society that doesn't, is a destitute totalitarian goddamn shithole - and the fact that you guys can't even see why that at least makes people skeptical of your grand utopian claims that if everyone just shared everything would be perfect is telling.
What contemporary social justice warriors have wet dreams about.

There's no government regulations that tell my boss not to pay me more. He'd even pay me less if it weren't for existing regulations.
there will never not be a class of people who's output is deemed to be of lesser value than everyone else's. You just think you can force the rest of us to value what it is they produce, and you can't.
Sure, there will always value assigned to people, but do you really think it's smart to keep the less valuable's wages below the cost of living?
Case in point. You want to force me to believe that flipping a fucking burger is on par with being an emergency medical response technician.
You want the service, you have to pay for it. It doesn't matter if it's not as cool as other services.
Flipping burgers isn't a bad job, especially for someone starting out, but past a certain point man..
Past a certain point? People want burgers flipped for them every day, so it has to be done every day. There's no point at which we're past that.
I'm scared to share my opinion on FB for fear of being unemployable, and when I do it's met with threats of being thrown out of a helicopter.
[–]the_calibre_cat1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, there are: Government regulations routinely increase the cost of doing business, which is money going towards something that isn't you. Your boss might well pay you more, because most bosses aren't the cartoon strawmen that socialists make them out to be and are usually interested in the well-being and happiness of their workers, but he can't, because leftist bureaucrats who haven't performed a lick of honest work in their lives decided that only professionally certified people can be trusted to refill propane tanks.
Bad things rarely happen, therefore everyone has to follow asinine rules that in many cases don't actually reduce the incidence rate of bad things (and may actually exacerbate it).
I should add, your focus on wages is dishonest. Compensation is a fairer metric, and since a lot of compensation nowadays is non-wage (a growing amount, in fact! I wonder why leftists ignore this?), we should be factoring in all compensation, not just one subset of it. When we do that, we find that compensation and productivity have actually been pretty closely linked.
You and I differ in that you think it's some kind of conscious choice. If we lived in a universe with infinite resources, there would be no justification for capitalism, or suffering from want or need in this world. We do not live in a universe with infinite resources, which is why a rationing system is justified. If we're using a rationing system, we might as well use the one that has strong pressures towards increasing efficiency, improvement, and access - that's free markets, and capitalism.
You want the service, you have to pay for it.
I do. You just object to the threshold at which I become unwilling to pay for it, and the filthy right-wingers are entirely correct: You wouldn't give people more money by introducing a price floor on that labor, you'd just excommunicate the labor that's actually only available at that market value from any monetary returns at all. Which is pretty much exactly what basic economics explains, but for some reason the socialists in Seattle's city council needed to test those forces. With human lives. Again.
Right, there's maintenance fertility rates and high school teenagers who can do that for us. If you're 45 and still working at a McDonald's and not the manager... maybe the problem isn't society, man.
Hilarious. I don't even share my modestly right-wing shit on Facebook because, despite living in a red state, I'm surrounded by neoliberal redistributionists (who "support capitalism") at best, and communists and socialists at worst.

You didn't check, then, because no, we don't.
...non-wage compensation is for the upper middle class;
Patently false, not to mention the fact that the franchise of investment and property ownership is pretty much available to anyone who isn't a flying fuck with their money.
...and your typical burger flipper is now an adult.
Depending on how you define "adult," 60% of fast food workers are under 24. The average age is 29. And productivity in that sector has not gone up in decades.

Not entirely sure what you mean by your statement. I wouldn't let anyone manage my retirement personally but if I was they would have to be both 100% trustworthy and also extremely knowledgeable of investments.

Socialists (for lack of a better mass identifier) often do. They really do. You’d think that was a straw-man and low-effort self-congratulatory and thus avoid assuming it. But then it turns out actually being the case regardless. They frequently never understood the basic principle of the invisible hand either. That selfish aims of buyers and suppliers alike in the marketplace provides collective prosperity through competition and division of labor (the key to mass production as Adam Smith describes it). I suspect OP doesn’t. Socialists often see capitalism as stealing and taking from others, unaware that income tax and tax redistribution is exactly that (though I’m not discounting all kinds of taxation) while free enterprise in its essential form is not.
Poverty is a choice, I say, and socialists willingly choose it out of sheer ignorance of basic economics.
[–]Alth12Purple Pill Man6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Yes. Hilarious fact of life is that capitalism is the best vehicle we have for the uplifting of people from poverty, not socialism, not communism. People who are given enough for free lack motivation to improve, generally.
Case study in point - Vietnam. Equal rice for everybody? Economy tanked. Basic safety nets? Stagnation. Market Capitalism? Drastically lowering rates of poverty and the fastest growing economy in se Asia.
Its the inconvenient truth of western socialist ideals.
[–]N0blesse0blige3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, agree. The fact that high intelligence is associated with more libertarian and free market attitudes says a lot, I think. One either grasps basic abstract concepts or not. If not then capitalism easily looks like it’s not going to work.
Naive intuition says that max price regulation will give the poor access to goods otherwise unattainable for example. As you know, it’s not the case.
Unchecked prices attract more contenders looking to earn money from wealthier buyers which in turn drives down the price due to increased competition and more effective production methods indirectly financed by the wealthy buyers. Now the poor can buy too.
Price regulation on the other hand makes production unprofitable due to low margins and shuts down businesses during periods of increased production costs. Competition is stifled. Now the store shelves are empty whether you’re rich or poor.

Yes, which is why the higher the minimum wage, the higher the unemployment among unskilled workers. It's one of the economic conundrums of our time. Neither political side has any grasp on making it work as again, the rights advocation of tax cuts to businesses does not guarantee an increase in jobs. In actual fact it often leads to companies repatriotizing money to buy back shares.
[–]VUELO_LA3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Spot on. I heard a saying once from an elderly person, “people got money for the things they want money for”, which in context was about how people talk about how unaffordable something is when in reality if they had prioritized properly and didn’t manage money foolishly, they’d be fine.

Why don’t you start with investing just a little bit of money in savings every month so you can build up a buffer of one month’s pay? That gives you a lot more economic flexibility and security which in turn will save you more money, since you can deal with unexpected expenses without taking up credit.
Have you optimized every aspect of your monthly expenses? Do you have the cheapest cell phone service, power, internet provider? Are you making food for just one day at a time, when you could be saving both time, money and effort cooking in bulk? Do you need «both netflix and hbo» for example, and do you really need HD playback to enjoy most series? Do you have a car when you can basically just use uber instead? Did you get an iphone when you could just get an excellent android phone like the Motorola moto g5 at just 1/5 of the price with all the same basic funcionality and usability? And did you buy it new when you could cut the price in another half by buying second-hand? Did you waste money on brand clothing when you can dress just as stylish with cheap brands? Dressing well is 90 % fit and good taste, and neither is exclusive to expensive brands (I’m saying this as a man, I know it may be different often to many people, especially women).
(This advice is just meant as friendly suggestions, and not to trivialize your economic situation, or anything.)
[–]the_calibre_cat0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Why don’t you start with investing just a little bit of money in savings every month so you can build up a buffer of one month’s pay?
Mostly because of my youthful indiscretions that left me in a fair amount of debt. Right now, I've got a decent job and run my own little business on the side, but a pretty decent chunk of my income each month goes to paying down that debt - and I'm making pretty good headway! Had a $12,000 debt as of January 2016 that I whittled down to $800 as of this month, so... slowly but surely!
The other issue is that I rent a place, and it's nice and big! It's also a bit expensive when I don't have roommates, which, as I transition from "being in debt" to building some equity, I am finding myself having less and less patience with. Plus, I'm pretty sure the ladies have a bit more respect for a man who doesn't have roommates versus one that does.
But, you're right, there's no question that I'm not as diligent and disciplined with my more than adequate monthly take-home than I am. I could use at least some of a savings, and realistically? I'd like to be throwing a good amount of money into savings, retirement, and investments each month. I did alright with Bitcoin, I'd like to get some precious metals just for the hedge, and I'd like to invest in traditional stocks and market instruments.
Have you optimized every aspect of your monthly expenses?
To a degree!
Are you making food for just one day at a time, when you could be saving both time, money and effort cooking in bulk?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Some weeks, I'm motivated as fuck and cook all of my lunches and dinners for a week on Sunday, and have a reasonably healthy (banana, greek yogurt, two hard boiled eggs) breakfast that I eat at work each day.
Do you have a car when you can basically just use uber instead?
I can't imagine Uber being cheaper where I live.
Did you get an iphone when you could just get an excellent android phone like the Motorola moto g5 at just 1/5 of the price with all the same basic funcionality and usability?
I... have a Motorola G5. It's great, except for the potato inside of it that they have the gall to call "the camera." :x
And did you buy it new when you could cut the price in another half by buying second-hand?
I did buy it new, because... it was released in August 2017. But I got an okay deal on it, like $270, which I don't mind paying for a new phone, with a warranty, that likely doesn't have the quirks that come with a refurbished phone. I'll buy refurbished computers, but phones... are usually fairly used and abused by the time they're being resold as "refurbs." Also, software bloat ensures they run pretty slowly... prior to my G5 Plus, I had a Samsung Galaxy S4. I used that shit for four years before I FINALLY was forced to get this G5 Plus because my attempts at fixing my S4 (replaced the screen twice) finally did it in.
Did you waste money on brand clothing when you can dress just as stylish with cheap brands? Dressing well is 90 % fit and good taste, and neither is exclusive to expensive brands (I’m saying this as a man, I know it may be different often to many people, especially women).

Great to hear that you are doing well economically, or at least better! Wipe out that remaining debt without mercy as if it were a pathogen attacking your immune system. Live as an ascetic monk for a while if necessary.
Debt can be a difficult thing to live with, and when people are young they are sort of encouraged, I think, in different ways, to acquire it. One example is getting long, protracted educations of questionable and varying quality, and thus increasing student loans. Studies should rather be done in increments on-demand while working on the side.
The other would be this idea that credit with interest is somehow a normal and acceptable part of anyone’s economy when it is comparable to people who have a mild to moderate gambling problem. If a person has ever acquired interest-carrying credit card debt other than as an obvious one-time slight they should cut all of their credit cards in half, cancel them and throw them away.
The very idea of a consumer loan is ridiculous. Loans are for investments and interest-free buffering only. Young adults, especially, should move back to their parents (pay a small rent to them if necessary) before ever getting a credit card debt.
I think it should be no shame in having a pre-paid/gift card personal economy either.

TRP often aims to address much more mild forms of behavior and the unnecessary guilt or shame that can follow. For example, some men who can be manipulated by women who treat them badly but have mental health issues or threaten self harm. Or believe embellishing their accomplishments and social status in order to seduce women for the short term is bad. Such men can benefit from learning they are not obligated to people this way.
I agree that they jerk each other off about Machiavellian and shit and it's clear these people are way too neurotic to come anywhere close to that. Many are covert narcissists that are maybe trying to live something closer to their big man fantasies in the real world, but few are actually dangerous. You're acting like TRP is telling them to start a scam business or something.

Selfishness has the bad rep in human history despite it being the driving force of humanity. Anything people do is because of selfishness. You want to share or not, that's another matter. People like to share despite being selfish. People do not like being stolen from.
Doesn't matter from whom you are securing your resources since essentially anybody trying to claim having better right than you are the real thieves and assholes there. Not those who want to secure their own or their children's future. Some people got it all backwards and imagine everybody else as an asshole and themselves as an exception. All the time. Despite reality which disagree with it.
Trp cheers it because it is rarely talked about. Sadly.

First of all, it feels fucking great. My life is awesome and I sleep like a baby.
But hear I go.
Imagine there is a prize that is to be awarded to you or someone close to you, like a friend or family member. Would you want to get it even if you took it from someone more deserving? How about equally deserving? Less deserving? People have different desert criterion, but most would be willing to accept a prize that was their due. The amount of compensating desert needed to make you accept or not accept the prize is a measure of how selfish you are.
While women may claim to love the selfless, this is generally understood as the magnamity of a great and great-souled man, who stoops down to help the weak. Someone who is perfectly selfless would never claim anything, even his due. This is the province of saints and monks, who take only what they need to live. Redpill helps men realize that they really ought to take at least that which is their due, and encourages some to take more. Someone who is selfless rather than selfish puts others first. They are a doormat and often exploited. Healthy people are usually neutral or leaning selfish (few people would sacrifice their family for the lives of somewhat more deserving strangers).
You can't make genuine friendships if your friend thinks you'll throw yourself in front of a car for a stranger, and possibly take them with you.
Are you selfish?
Yes. Did you understand my post?
How selfish are you exactly? What's your take on altruists? Do you think they just haven't heard the gospel of selfishness yet or are simply retarded?

How is selfishness equivalent to no peace of mind? Everyone worries about securing resources. Like, for their families or allies. Securing resources for just yourself is easier. How does it reduce your freedom? Worrying about everyone else's well-being is harder than just worrying about your own.
Also, TRP bangs on about selfishness because a) they revere successful sociopath archetypes and b)ecause they had to come to TRP to learn to stop being wimpy and more selfishly assertive.
How is it consistent with selfishness to have allies? Also, is family off limits for selfishness and why?

A lot of RPers reduce every behavior to some kind of selfish motivation, and conflate the sort of selfish gene type selfishness and phenomenal or behavioral selfishness, and so the concept of selfishness loses its meaning
It's sort of a habit of edgy teens, to have the viewpoint that everyone is selfish and all behaviors have some ultimate selfish motive, and to take on a dark view of the world accordingly

Perhaps you just aren’t seeing that side of people. It’s not always about overt selfishness. It just appears that way to you because you have trouble understanding other people. That woman who is stingy about money could just have a family to take care of. She still “desires human relationships”.

You seem to be taking a concept (selfishness) and taking it to it's most ridiculous and extreme position, a position which no one, not TRPers, not even objectivists advocate for. This is what autists do.

getting along vs getting ahead. It's the human condition. deal with it.

Selfishness is a pretty simple concept. I do what I want, and everyone else can go fuck themselves. I have had sex with a lot of women where incels have had none, I do not feel bad about it. Everytime I stole an incels girlfriend, I did not worry about securing her. Every time MegaChad walks by I do not worry about protecting myself. No freedom is limited, just the opposite. I am mindful, because I'm not a retard, and people look out for me anyway. It is still easy to make and maintain genuine friendships, it's probably easier to be honest.

Incels dont usually have girlfriends. More likely you did the guy a favor if she was using him but wouldnt touch the guy

My sense is that unselfishness emerges in various ways, such as (1) mutual need (two parents need to raise children together and have to get along; a military squadron has to survive together in a war), (2) repeated interactions so that if you screw over your partner you are losing access to what would have been a long-term relationship, (3) religious belief - the idea that you will be rewarded for unselfish actions, (4) legal consequences of your actions.
Modern dating prior to marriage somehow seems to evade all of these points. (1) It is undertaken for hedonic purposes (pleasure) and not to produce children or any other material benefit, (2) people don't expect to get married, especially RP people; in some cases only casual sex is expected, (3) religion is suffering pretty severely, (4) there are no laws about how you treat your sexual partner, as long as you don't physically abuse them. So I think this is where it is coming from.
I think if you meet people through a network of friends, it can help because then you have a motivation to stay on good terms with mutual friends.
For myself, personally, I could not handle a relationship based on selfishness, and so I have to at least try to be unselfish, if only out of self-interest. :)

Big flaw in above is you're trying to control how OTHERS act when you can only control how you act.
You have to
protect yourself from the bigger predators
anyway, whether you're generally selfish or not.
This would require you to always be mindful and not to make any mistakes because no one will be looking out for you
Other people either do that or not. It's not directly in your control.
I can't imagine it's easy to make and maintain genuine friendships built on trust.
You have to adjust your expectations of others accordingly.

You should try this, its a beginners level explanation of game theory, why a balance of selfishness/generosity is ideal and how different circumstances affect that balance
The ideal approach in most scenarios is to be generous to strangers until they prove themselves untrustworthy and then be selfish back, until/unless they stop. Selfishness is a good response at times. It can also be the best overall strategy in situations (like fast serial dating) where you dont care about long term benefits of cooperation and just want to cycle through a bunch of victims.
I do think a large part of being a man is about giving, giving back, etc., look at all the effort that must be expended in order to satiate your desires. Of course one should be judicious in their giving
Anyone who thinks otherwise is likely acting
At least if you want to be a socially integrated man, which (at least at the top level) is a more powerful man than the RP non-conformist types TBQH
