How do you account for the "x factor"?

This presupposes that there are an infinite number of preferences and you have an infinite amount of time to find each other.

If there is a girl who is into fat neck-beards, this is only a valid strategy if you look at the chances your path will cross, and the chances that once you do, she won't already be taken.

If there are few girls like this, the chances of crossing paths with a girl like this is slim. If amount of neck-beards is greater than the amount of girls like this, then the market is saturated, and girls like this will have an easy time finding neck-beards, but it will be hard for neck-beards to find one that is available. So, this limits the ease of finding this even more.

I have a very UNscientific theory on "love at first site" type attraction. I'm sure much of it is learned preferences and whatnot, but I believe there is a chemical component to very strong immediate attraction. A few women I've known in my 45 years just "grab" and "hold" my attention, which if you knew me you would understand is a VERY rare thing. My current wife is one of them, and I'd swear under oath that she just smells intoxicating. No, not her perfume, just her. In fact, some of the smelly stuff she wears bothers me because it covers her "scent" up lol. Pheromones maybe, I have no idea. But I can say I've encountered it a very rare few times.

By that same logic, there would be men that would never be attractive to any women ever. This is all based on the almighty luck factor non-RPers rely so heavily on. "If you just be yourself and get out there, you'll meet someone perfect for you eventually." How many years should someone waste using this strategy with no success before trying something else? Anytime someone gives this advice I think in my head it means 'keep bashing your head against the wall, eventually you'll break through or die trying.'

You can't build a winning game plan around an x-factor, though. It's not reliable or consistently reproducible.

For many guys, if we stare at a given woman long enough often enough, we'll find something about her that we can focus on long enough to bust a nut.

I think you'll find the x factor phenomenon is pretty exclusive to men. Men see women and are smitten by some unorthodox preference they may have. Women on the other hand are much more hemogenous in their prefeferences. If you doubt what I'm saying just for a moment think about the praises heaped upon women in poetry, music, literature and art. Their shoulders, wrists, feet, waists, freckles, hair, eccentricities or lack their of are all praised and celebrated by men. This holds true when we look at porn as well. Small tits, big tits, milfs, teens, ebony, ivory, boyish and feminine there are so many catergories of porn for men that i must be admitted that men can find almost anything female arousing.

Now let's look at women. Women nearly universally all find the same man attractive. The tall, muscular, dominant yet protective man with the chiseled jaw and equine nose.

What are you asking? The "x factor" is attraction. It's not weird or crazy at all. "Conventionally attractive" just means that this person would be attractive to many people, it doesn't mean they'd be anyone's favorite or unique. You can think someone is conventionally attractive without being attracted to them. This is why "be yourself" is good advice as long as there's nothing alarmingly wrong with you.

It's similar to the v-factor(victim factor) psychopaths tends to gauge at first glance - how easily a person can be manipulated and preyed upon.

Some traits about the girl may match those of an ideal mate - won't stray, decent genetics, can be a good mother, won't make your life difficult, etc...

If it truly is 'instantaneous', perhaps there's less of a social and higher-cognitive component than a primal one.

Not if the goal is to maximize success. Same thing with obesity. Yes, there are some fat fetishists out there who conceivably find a morbidly obese person sexy, and losing weight would most likely decrease their attraction to you, but you would become more attractive to the vast majority of potential mates, meaning that getting in shape is a good strategy to maximize sexual success.
