example, a girl asks:

"why is a male bartender smiling and looking at me" the answers are:

  • maybe he likes you
  • thinks you're pretty, beautiful, cute etc.
  • he is horny (there's a chance)
  • something about you is interesting to him
  • Or he just likes to look at you (which may come across as creepy)

guy asks "why is that cashier girl staring and smiling at me?"

  • "she's literally paid to be nice you weirdo!"
  • "You probably think strippers like you too! She's in the service industry, that's her job.
  • "we're raised to smile at men out of fear of getting attacked!"
  • "maybe there is a giant bugger in your nose!"
  • "us girls stare at trainwrecks too you know"

These are all actual responses I gathered from threads asking the same thing, but when it was a woman OP asking it the answers tipped in her expectations "yes eye contact and smiling means he likes you" while the guy is always yelled at as some socially inept weirdo. Why is that?
