When people on this sub talk about "settling," or lowering standards, people miss why high standards are a problem. Obviously if women or men have overly inflated standards it means more people will be single - if only men above 7 feet will get a date, 99% of men will be single. Again, x number of people on this sub will ask why that's a problem.

Mass singleness is not your problem if you're ok being single, but individuals aren't the only thing that matter. Marriage and family are not only a pretty basic expectation and hope for someone to have, but they're also necessary for the world to function. If more children aren't born, old people will have no safety net and nobody to take care of them, if people have no hope of starting a family you'll have a bunch of dangerous disaffected people, and growth is necessary for the way our economy works. This is aside from the basic fact that most people don't want to be single for life.

None of this is to say that people should settle or lower their standards, but I think it's stupid to treat mass singleness as if it's not a problem.
