I'm guessing what you're really asking here is about masculine traits?

If so: self-sufficiency rules above all else. There's also perceived strength (don't show weakness), personal success, earned value, a knowledge of stereotypical masculine topics like how to fix things yourself and an interest in sports and cars, and of course giving off an air of confidence in yourself and your abilities.

Of course with the modern world as it is, women are expected to take up some of these traits too as the norm is for them to have careers and work for a living as men do, but it's still something which men are judged more harshly on imo.

If this is a question about the operant differences between masculinity and femininity or simple definitions thereof, then I'm going to concretely posit that the core tenet of masculinity is territorial behavior, whereas the core tenet of femininity is a sense of nurturing.

All other characteristics, IHMOtep, either fall under the umbrella of those two descriptors, or are mostly environmental factors where YMMV.

Is not concerned with pleasing others, pursuing the approval of others.

In the abstract sense? Mastery. Either of his environment, or his instincts. It's a form of strength, either way.

Red and blue never stop arguing about it, because so many in team red regard fighting any of your masculine instincts as treason, and so many in team blue are sick of team red's frequent Daddy issues and sense of wounded entitlement.

The reality is more complicated than that, but if we paused to acknowledge all the complications, we might actually accomplish something, instead of just killing time with a text based multiplayer game.

Masculinity/feminity are a continuum and are somewhat influenced by current cultural norms.

However, if we're talking about what makes a man 'masculine' in the biological sense: above 6'0" height, high level of facial masculinization, deep set eyes, broad shoulders etc. are all traits indicating a high degree of masculinity and good genetic provider material.

Is being a man and being masculine synonymous?

Not in the traditional understanding of the term. No more than being a woman is synonymous with being feminine in the traditional understanding of the term.

('Traditional' as in what was traditional over the past couple of hundred years.)

Society decides what is masculine in every era. In the days of harems, you might have had a fat, slobbering useless man as the sultan, who had sex with a different woman every day of the year. And some might have thought of him as masculine - simply because he slept with lots of women, other men wanted to be him and because he held power.
