So for context, my ex had a habit of not being able to hold down work and constantly brought up wanting to be a kept wife with out kids. So I recognized some red flags so it's a bit of listening to my gut, and the people around me seeing these red flags as well. I think that is important in the steps I took. -I did not buy a home. -I kept all of my receipts for all the bills, grocery,rent,power internet. -I did not do a joint account. I had a prenup.

In essence I kept my finances separate as much as possible. I also made sure that any benefits like my pension, survivor benefits were all revocable with out having her sign off on it,(there is a provision in my benefits when you sign up for this in my Union package) Most importantly I played nice during the divorce, I made sure I stayed civil no matter how ugly the other side got. I also didn't fight over "stuff"(furniture etc..) I kept what was mine, but there is no reason to start shit over stuff, keeps it civil. And document ,document, document.

what saved my ass was when i bought my house, i had my ex on it. but then i got my mom on it also. so while she thought she owned half, she really only owned a 1/3. we were close to getting married, but didn't. then she said she was gonna sue me and all i said was "you're gonna go in front of a judge and ask for $ all of which was mine at the time of purchase. and when that doesn't work you wanna tell him that you wanna be reimbursed for all the renovations you paid for, but you were on the title. you improved your own shit?"
she knew she was had, gave me a little shit about getting off the title, but when i looked into it, all she had to do was not live there for a time. and it hurt her finances having it, dumb bitch financed a car a month before she quit claim deeded when she realized i didn't have to give her a dime. she was wanting to get a mortgage i think. did i mention my place was completely paid off, bought foreclosed.

Well to start, there's half the country that is constantly trying to take away a woman's right to control what happens in her own body through local, state and federal legislation and lawsuits.

But it isn't about laws - it's about societal and business world shortcomings. Do I even need to mention the #MeToo movement exposing widespread sexual harassment in the workplace? How women who say no to men's advances or reported harassment are fired or blacklisted from industries? Also the fact that many men in power won't have dinners with people other than their wife - do you know how valuable an asset dinner meetings are in the business world? How about Wall Street's great strategy of avoiding women at all costs? Women's careers are suffering all because some men can't help themselves and keep their dick in their pants?

How is that not bullshit to you? I mean I'm a dude who works at a large office and I see this shit pulled all the time. I'm a significant other who's had to hear his loved one cry because some dude stuck his hand down her pants while walking by in the bar. Feminism is an act against the broader culture that seems to condone this and that tells guys that it is okay to pull this shit.

Your original argument “don’t get a gf if you can’t pay your own bills” is relatively sound but also blatantly incorrect in many circumstances; I understand the intention, but many took it as “make sure to pay for your gf’s stuff,” which isn‘t what you meant judging by your own other comments.

Your thread spun out more when you more or less started insulting people splitting bills and whatnot, finally derailing when, like, I said, you more or less stated how suspicious you are of anyone who talks about their happy relationship.

As a woman, I’m sometimes frustrated by other women viewing life this way. My best friend is a stay-at-home mom. She and her husband talked about it before they got married and they both wanted that life, even though she made more than he did. They both agreed he would support them financially, and she would stay home to raise the kids. Neither of them look at it like she’s getting a free ride.

I dated my ex for 10 years and we kept everything separate, could afford our bills individually if necessary, and when we broke up, neither of us tried to take advantage of the other. I know it’s not always that simple, but it definitely comes down to character. I couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I didn’t feel like I was contributing both financially and in effort to maintain a life together. Yeah but, there's a male equivalent to this no one really talks about. In a lot of cases the woman handles the home life and is really supportive to the guy then when he says get a job and she says "okay!"

But now he is expected to handle half of the home life stuff as well as be supportive to her more and accept less then he was use to getting because she doesn't have time for that and needs it to now, he has a tantrum and freaks out like he's the one who hasn't been working and she asked him to get a job. I know not all cases are like this, but if your woman's job is you and relieving you of many out of work responsibility's then asking her to get another job means you're getting another job too.

I seen men have a great women who did everything for them, tell them they have to get a job so they do, then when the men realize she can't keep up all the things she did like before and they have to shoulder half those responsibility's now, get mad at her and divorce her.
