You're asking for an opinion, so I'll be blunt and say yes. If you don't consider this a symbol of unity, this relationship is likely to progress as those of most 17-year-olds and you'll break up down the road, which is entirely normal and healthy. Instead of having an ex-boyfriend, though, you'll have an ex-husband. If you're in this space, you likely want a somewhat traditional man and I can tell you from experience that being a young divorcee complicates your dating life. Don't do this.

You’re a teenager. You’ve only been together for 6 months. And you wanna do this for the extremely shortsighted plan of living off campus for a year?

I really can’t think of a stupider idea. I am SHOCKED your parents would okay this.

Marriage is a legal contract. Divorce is expensive. Both of these things are permanent. Like apart if your identity for the rest of your life. If it doesn’t work out you will always be a “divorcee” - have fun explaining that one to the next people you date.

I mean MAYBE I would understand if there was citizenship or a baby in the mix- would make more sense… but this is all to just live out of a dorm. You realize how silly that sounds, right?

My local news recently did a story on college students getting married to get better financial aid and living accomodations. It's an extremely risky move. In some states your boyfriend would be entitled to half of what you own and you could end up being legally responsible for half of the debts he picks up while you're married. The divorce process takes an entire year in some places, and typically costs hundreds or even thousands of dollars of lawyer fees for the paperwork. It may also be seen as a red flag by whoever you do want to marry for love in the future.

Yo as a 19 yo college student, I get where you’re coming from, and my uni has the same rule, but divorces w no lawyers or anything still cost around $500. If stuff goes wrong then it’ll be way more than that. You’ve been dating him for 6 months. That’s nowhere near enough time to tell if someone will try to screw you over in the event of a breakup.
