What IS femininity?

Honestly when I ponder this question I see it from a weird angle. I tend to think of well what isn't feminine, which in my world would be things like aggressive behavior, overly blunt, being "fake", gossiping, speaking ill of people, assuming the worst in them etc.

Handling things with grace, being empathetic, being a good conversationalist and a good listener etc are things I associate with femininity.

I think of masculinity as things that embolden/strengthen yourself and femininity as things that embolden/strengthen others.

Therefore, lacking masculinity would be knocking yourself down. Lacking femininity would be you pulling down others.

Everyone should have some amount of both.

I admit I haven't given it a ton of thought until your post, so I'm mostly just pulling this out of my butt. However, I get my image of femininity from an animated TV character named Tohru Honda. She's the epitome of femininity to me. An absolutely wonderful and inspiring woman.

I want to answer this because it's an interesting question. I have never seen a satisfactory definition that makes me go "ah yes that". So musing out loud:

Feminine is somewhat de-coupled from "what is it to be a woman". Not every woman is feminine and not every female-trait is feminine.

For instance, in For Men Only (talking about women's characteristics) - they find that women tend to be insecure in relationships and need constant reassurance. This is the case even after marriage. No one would say "insecurity is feminine" even if insecurity is female. Maybe that means feminine is our idealized version of women?

Receptive, nurturing, introspective (draws you in), beautiful (creates beauty around her), still/calm/quiet presence

A definition has to be universal to be useful. But are all women feminine to the same degree, no. And I do not think that "feminine" is all that a woman should be. It is an aspect of womanhood maybe?

I'm sure I have more thoughts on this but I'm not quite sure what they are at 8am.

Female solipsism is very real and it can prevent harmony within relationships when a woman refuses to consider other perspectives than her own. To combat this, consciously seek to understand where your SO is coming from. Consider how he would want you to respond, act, or treat him in a situation, instead of assuming or projecting. Be compassionate and a source of comfort, but pay attention and give him space when he needs it.

Poised. This quality is harder to nail down but it is the end result of psychological femininity. A sense of composure, dignity, grace, and self-assurance radiates from the woman who embraces the positive aspects of her nature. Remember that your choices affect how your SO is perceived, so always carry yourself with purpose and distinction. This means proper posture, presenting yourself well, speaking clearly and in a light tone, and not chattering aimlessly.

For me its care and being sensitive. Caring for family is feminine to me. Calling parents and grandparenrs on regular basis and visiting regularly is care and femininity. Being kind in general is very feminine to me. When you are open to strangers or people in the supermarket.

Behaviors descended from and exaggerating the differences between male and female.

For example - women have less body hair than men. Shaving what we do have is an exaggeration of that difference and a feminine behavior. Biologically, women feed and nurture infants. Feeding and caring for the basic needs of others is a feminine behavior.
