Growing up my friends and I were all knuckleheads (and probably still are to an extent). He liked all of my close friends (which so happened to have the traditional families) but the other guys that would hang around, not all of them, but a good portion he didn't. He used to say that they needed a dad.

I used to just think he was a dick when I was in my teens. But looking back now he somehow called it. We didn't live in the Brady Bunch where the parents really knew each other, they'd meet once tops and wave when whoever's kid got picked up by their parent, but he never knew first hand.

Somehow he called it though. Somehow he called that every kid without a dad (drunk/negligent/absent), that he didn't like, and said were trouble because of that. Each and every single kid he said that about ended up a junkie, in jail or prison, or died (usually ODs).

Sure we all got in trouble as kids. Me and my close friends would get brought home by cops for skating where it wasn't allowed or drinking beers, but it was never severe. The other kids were the ones doing vandalism, theft, heavy drugs young, fights, and worse.

I don't know how the old man knew, but he did and he was right. Boys need a father to teach them how to be men. How to do the right thing and how to understand how the world works.

Edit: and one thing he taught me that always stuck with me was if I'm ever in doubt about doing anything to ask myself "would I do this if my dad were here?" That advice has kept me from at least two confirmed girls with STDs (didn't know at the time and it wasn't at the time of banging, but if he'd approve of me talking to girls like them), out of countless fights about trivial bullshit, acting out of anger in a ton of circumstances.. that advice is the one of the cornerstones that made me the man I am today. Kids being raised by single mothers will never understand anything like that.
