Summary:

A brief guide for the bigger TRP readers on how to begin losing weight. TLDR: Keto

Introduction:

It doesn't take long for new readers of TRP to gauge that going to the gym is indisputably the most important teaching of TRP and your personal development as a male. My experience is that putting your fitness aside for professional success does not get the attention that you are told you deserve in your twenties (i.e. Beta Bux). However, the stories and guides relating to fitness within this subreddit assume that you are skinny-fat rather than obese. As an obese/overweight personal, it is pinnacle that you begin improving your diet before you even think about beginning the many awesome readings in the side bar. An obese person who reads TRP without making a conscious effort to lose weight is not enlightened, they are a neckbeard.

Diet:

From May to December last year I lost 90 lbs. I lost the first 40 lbs without any exercise. How? Keto. I advise you to read about keto yourself, but the TLDR is that you will gain energy from eating fat instead of carbs. My experience was I felt extremely shit one day as I was adjusting to ketosis and every other day I have felt much healthier than when I have eaten carbs. I strongly recommend learning your macros and TDEE (check the sticky on the keto-gains subreddit) and recording them initially, I tried to stick to 45% fat, 50% protein and 5% carbs. Keto is all about substitutions, if you find low carb substitutions for the food you currently enjoy, you will succeed.

Below is a list of food I would eat often:

Breakfast

  • Hard Boil 6 eggs at a time and eat 2 every morning with bacon
  • (Non-processed) Peanut butter (straight from the jar with a tablespoon)
  • Bacon cooked with olive oil or coconut oil

Lunch

  • Tuna/Salmon Salad
  • Keto friendly smoothies (Almond milk and double cream)

Dinner

  • Caveman Keto Chilli (slow cook on sunday for the rest of the week)
  • Lazy Caveman Keto chicken
  • Creamy Spinach
  • Steak
  • Salmon
  • Slow Cooked Pork/Chicken with spinach

Snacks and treats

  • Pork Rinds
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Deli Meats and Cheese
  • Frozen Protein Ice Cream (called Whey-Whip here)
  • Very high % chocolate with double cream

Drinks

  • ALOT of water
  • Zero sugar soft drink (it will rot your insides but it won't fuck up your macros)
  • Zero sugar sports drinks - no nutritional benefit but helps you get over sugar cravings
  • Spirits with zero sugar mixers

One of the biggest criticisms of Keto is the cost of eating so much meat. If you eat eggs for breakfast, canned tuna for lunch and chicken thighs for dinner you wouldn't spend more than $10 a day on food. I hope for some readers that this dispels the myth that you need to buy expensive ingredients and spend massive amounts of time in the kitchen to lose weight. If you are a big guy, just eating the above should cause you to lose around 10 lbs in a week. A final bonus is girls LOVE talking about diets, you can call it paleo as it is well known.

Exercise:

Losing weight for me is 90% diet, 10% exercise. I treat exercise mainly as a stress release. As you begin to lose weight, you will notice the amount you lose each week begins to fall or you get irritated you aren't losing weight faster and hopefully this will incentivise you to start exercising. The only point I'd like to make is that NEARLY every post on fitness subreddits about someone losing weight then gaining muscle has the person say they regretting not lifting earlier. Make sure you start slowly and safely and soon enough people will be asking for you to show them your fat guy calves!

Falling off the Wheel:

I gained so much weight due to the stress of a LTR and a high stress job. The reason I wrote this post is the stress of work has caused me to fall of the wagon and put on a lot of weight very quickly, as of now I want to get back on that wagon. We need to understand that there are some times in our lives that are going to be very stressful and figure out how to cope with this stress so we don't do long lasting damage to ourselves. I don't have any ideas for this at the moment, but I'm actively looking.

Lessons Learned:

  • Losing weight is not hard if we find a framework that works for us

  • Reduce Sugar Intake and the rest will follow

  • Start the gym ASAP but DON'T HURT YOURSELF

  • If you are a stress eater, figure out a method of coping with stress that isn't eating
