I had a date from Hinge and lot of things were done right.

He planned the date and paid - which was very nice. Gallery, dinner, then hot chocolate. Very nice date plan. He looked clean and had got a haircut the day before. But overall, I didn’t enjoy it and I wanted to document it to get my head straight.

First of all:

  • Lied about his height.

He said he was 6’0 and referenced it a few times. I’m 4’11 so don’t really care about height. Still, he was not 6’0. And that annoyed me because it meant that he was willing to lie about something so trivial and obvious. That brought my attraction to him way down.

  • Hardly complimented me

I was wearing a summer dress and boots and had curled my hair. I told him I liked his outfit but he barely said anything about mine or how I looked. I think my colleagues give me more compliments than this guy. He also said he didn’t like my bag because it was an unusual design. It’s fine if people have different taste but isn’t it polite to just say nice things? Especially on a date.

  • No jokes or laughing.

I love to laugh and I make conversation with people easily - but this guy was NOT having any banter. I’d make a joke and he’d do a tight lipped smile and then look away, in complete silence. Even if I was trying to tease or be flirty, it wasn’t reciprocated.

  • Made mean comments about others.

There was a group of teen girls walking in front of us at one point and they were wearing pastel coloured clothes, with a top and mini skirt. He said that he didn’t like their outfits and that if he were a dad he wouldn’t want his kids to dress “trashy”. Then he said that he presumed they were “gypsies” because they were dressed like that. I tried to lighten the mood by saying that they can dress how they like and that I thought they looked nice but I got no response.

Overall, I wasn’t enjoying myself a lot.

But then we went to a park and he asked to kiss me but he would get turned off by the smallest things. He said I was being too “passionate” although I think he was just embarrassed he was getting hard. And then when I playfully giggled, he took it personally and thought I was laughing at him. I had to grovel and tell him I wasn’t and that it was just a nervous and playful giggle.

I’m really disappointed that it went this way because it’s my first date in years and it feels like it was the best I could do. Don’t know what to do now. Just feel sad that it went so mediocre.
