The sheer amount of “my boyfriend cried because he was thinking about life without me 🥺😭💓” type content that is going around is ludicrous.

And around Valentine’s Day is when they are in steady supply.

Tik toks and Instagram posts that capture romcom levels of sentiment displayed by the boyfriend.

This is just a reminder of how performative that shit is.

My friend posts CONSTANTLY about her boyfriend and how he “never wants to let go of my hand” and “he’s so dreamy when he’s sleeping”.

Yet I know that this guy has never cooked her a meal in their entire 4 year relationship, and has never taken her out to a restaurant for a date.

A co-worker always posts a montage of her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day saying that he is “my better half, my soulmate, my little bug” when it’s common knowledge that he fingered one of the interns at an office party.

I see so many girls post these semi-bragging posts, highlighting (and exaggerating) their boyfriends good behaviour despite them failing in other ways.

I find that the people I know who are in the most solid relationships, don’t spend their time trying to film and edit and post and caption little mini romcoms so that other people can be jealous.

Also, the guys? I never see them make drippy posts about their girlfriends in return so I guess that tells you everything 🤷🏻‍♀️
