Ballsy move, but your opener invited them to judge you, by in essence asking them “hey do you like me?”.

That is the opposite of what decades old wisdom dictates. You qualify them, instead of asking them to qualify you.

You missed a golden opportunity to some fun banter (for instance, best friend test followed up by playfully accusing them of lying about them being mother and daughter) and maybe you should learn some canned openers.

But approaching them in itself, ballsy. Nice.

Fair one, I hardly ever approach girls with family, there is something about seeing them with a parent which makes me question if they are over 18 or not. Or even if they are over 18, I still dead judgement from the parent if the parent chews me out for being an older guy.

Kudos for approaching. Here are my 2 cents…

You can have “boring” conversation and get better results. By results, I don’t mean a new number or a new date. That will come as you gain wisdom. I’m referring to the quality of the interaction. The overall vibes. It sounds like these 2 women had some light-hearted fun at your expense because you subjected yourself to their judgment before you built any rapport. Not the end of the world by any means. But the interaction itself could have been better.

Let your actions do more of the talking. You don’t need a great opener to stand out. You already stand out by approaching in the first place. Most men are cowards. They don’t approach because 1) they’re afraid of rejection & embarrassment or 2) they are afraid of being seen as creeps. You’ll notice guys reply to stuff like this with whatever excuse or justification seems convenient. It all stems from fear, whether or not they admit it. They are letting fear take control of their lives. Thankfully, you don’t succumb to this fear. You act in spite of this fear. Awesome.

Just because you started the interaction, it doesn’t mean you led it. You approached her and immediately passed the baton by making it seem like her judgment mattered more than yours. You don’t know a thing about her, and she doesn’t know a thing about you. Let the impressions build naturally over the course of a “boring” conversation.

Part of being confident is not seeking validation. You just assume if she has a moment to get to know you, she’ll “swipe right” in her mind. If she goes on a date with you, she’ll like you more at the end of the date than she did at the beginning. And you know this to be true (more often than not) because you know you are a pleasure to spend time with. But that is only half of the equation.

You should never be sold on a woman based on looks alone. Asking a woman if she’d swipe right gives her the impression you’re already sold. And while women like respectful attention, they want to be liked for who they are… not for how they look. Most men already like her for how she looks. So how would you stand out?

This is why “boring” conversation is effective. What you’re saying sounds completely normal… but your body language is on point. Your tone of voice, your smirk & smile, your eye contact, your ability to read the room… all of this is telling her the real story. Women naturally observe all these subtleties. You showing that you can, too, shows her that you “get it.” And that is an attractive trait because it shows women you can speak their language. Most guys are oblivious and so much goes over their heads.

Women want a guy who “gets it.” It’s hard to explain what that means but the closest term this community might understand is calibration. Confidence + “boring” content makes you seem more like a normal guy. The “normal” guy I’m referring to understands the subtlety & nuance that comes with being sociable. They know how to read the room. Their quiet confidence is felt within their presence. Confidence + strange topics makes you seem weird, obnoxious, and like someone who doesn’t know how to read the room. As the PUA community would say, you’re uncalibrated.

We live and we learn. But the whole swipe right thing being the first thing to come out of your mouth makes people wonder why that is top of mind for you. Are you chronically swiping on dating apps? That’s what it sounds like to me. Some people don’t use dating apps at all. To them, you might come across as desperate or a sleaze. Was that the case here? Who knows? I’m offering different angles as to how your opener can come across to different people.

I would suggest to be more casual and simple, not that many women crave smart ass openers. Don’t be discouraged, process feedback and figure out new methods. Also, don’t get too bitter about other’s opinions, it’s so easy to criticize, not that easy to put yourself under public criticism.
