I'd say agree and inflate. Like jokingly put your arm around the girl and say that you're married. On the other hand you could do the opposite and say "no way!" and slightly push the girl away or step back. The point is to make it over the top and let it be clear that you're joking either way.

There are so many good ways to say, "She wishes" that it will likely be my go to from here on out.

She wishes:

Bashful like it's what you wish
with a wink (Create an inside joke about it)
move directly into the role play "think about it," arm around shoulder, "We are here together in <3. Tonight, this seedy bar. Tomorrow Paris!"
dark & moody, a little regretful for her loss, like she'll never get her wish

But this is what I had been saying.

"Ha! Oh that's sweet of you to guess. No, I just like too make it look like I'm dating the prettiest girl in the room. I find it helps you find the coolest one."

transition into

"There was this cool study about distance between people in social groups. So right now you're standing here, normally. Right? But when a really attractive person enters the room. Everyone starts standing here." direct eye contact, touch, "There is something subconscious and universal about sexual gravity. I want everyone to feel that kind of buzz all the time. Or at least at high energy parties." continue conversation wherever it leads.

This one worked with girl I have been friends with for a while.. "actually she is my ex-wife". She laughed and played along, we came up with our fake Vegas marriage, how her parents were mad we eloped.. how her mom thought she was preggo, the whole bit..

What's key, IMO, is it shows off your funny/improv style of just going for it.. and it makes her want to be just as funny to hang.

Ended up fooling around drunk later that night.

Any serious response is a bad response. Any half-way serious response is a bad response. For example:

"Absolutely, we're planning the wedding!" -- sure, you're joking, but it can still sound creepy no matter how joking you make it sound.
"No way, she's not in my league" -- now you just sound like an asshole. Again, joking, but you're opening yourself up to negative follow-up questioning like, 'yeah, right - I remember when girl xyz wouldn't even give you her phone number."

So, what you need to do is get inventive and have fun with it AND bring her into the story. This is where you exhibit your humor and give her positive vibes at the same time. Start with, "You must not know. It is a sad tale. Our families have been at war for hundreds of years. No one knows why - something about pantaloons. Isn't this right? (look at her for buy-in). But to this day it continues. So while it's obvious we look fabulous together (notice you're not presuming a relationship, just a joint compliment), any thing between us is forbidden. Alas...forbidden....

Sounds totally stupid. And it is. But it defuses the tension of the question. If the questioner persists, I always say, "I totally would, but my father sold my hand in marriage to a Masari chief for 3 cattle and an ox. But it was a nice looking ox, so I understand."

EDINANAU; Used it recently when a lecturer at my college saw me and a chick grabbing lunch together. Brought on a roleplay thing about 'our' married life for weeks on end. We have two kids and I hate her mother.
