I'm fairly sure it's a metaphor for the man's life and relationship with his wife, who he regrets not making a deeper connection with. The key line is

But no, you were gone. And I realized most likely I would never see you again. And I thought about how amazing it is that you can know somebody for sixty years and yet still not really know that person at all.

It's only approach anxiety on the surface. This is about the fear of true intimacy.

Man what a beautiful piece, reminds me of Paperman, the Dysney short movie, at least that ends well. Just made me realized about the dozens of missing opportunities we have with people, and the excuses we give for not striking up a conversation with them ( " I'm too tired", " Don't feel like talking", "She's probably busy"). Then again, striking up a conversation with someone on a subway, let alone flirting, is pretty scary. Utter silence, it's just the two of you talking, everyone is in on the conversation trying to figure out how it will end.

A good motivation to approach is that if you don't within a reasonable time, you'd seem awkward or creepy, or both.

With all due respect, approaching is probably the easiest part of the whole 'game', if you want to call it that.

I don't think I've ever been emotionally paralyzed like that before. That was a really weird feeling, reading that. It was both sad, fear, and disappointment.
