I'm really trying to get my shit together. I'm 36, overweight, and got laid off about a month ago. I had a pretty good mental breakdown, and after some reflection, I just realized how I'm stuck in these patterns that I make myself miserable, so I'm making a very concerted effort to just try, in my life.

Well, losing weight may be important, but that shit is also going to take a while. Like, quite possibly the rest of my life. There's no quick-fix, and I'm not going to be at "my goal weight" anytime soon. So I feel like I need to start making the effort to get out and meet people face-to-face, even if I'm not totally comfortable with where I'm at yet.

Thing is, my social circle is super small. I have two friends nearby, both are married with kids and are total home-bodies now (one of whom has been kind of an asshole, and tends to make everything about him anyways). So the only "social interaction" I can really think of if just going to a bar.

I'm very much a wall-flower when I don't feel like I know people. I never go to places by myself, and the rare occasions I have, I usually wind up just sitting in a corner by myself, not talking to anyone, and then leaving once the crushing loneliness or awkwardness starts to set in.

I'm really trying to break out of old patterns. But just the thought of going out to a bar or something by myself, with nobody to talk to and nothing to talk about, makes me nervous to think about. I can't imagine that being very conducive to meeting people.

How do you guys get over that? Or is that even something you can get over, or it's just more of a personality trait you're stuck with?
