Ok, is everyone missing the part where this guy is DEAD? Yet for some reason, a judge must still rule how much he owes in child support. For kids that essentially aren't his.

Guys,

NEVER NEVER NEVER date a woman with a child or play fill-in daddy.

A judge can declare you daddy (of course that just means you have to pay child support - you have no parenting rights) at the stroke of a pen.

A friend of mine dated a girl with a small child for a year or two. Everyone knew he wasn't the biological father - they didn't even know each other when the baby was born. BUT he was Mr. nice guy. You know he "manned up" and was nice to the kid. After he broke up with her she sued him for child support... AND WON!

What disturbs me most is the ending line stating that only 2/3 of the states have laws to prevent this from happening to anyone. That's something I'd sure as hell want to know before donating sperm, and I'm not sure if most donors do.

Also - why is she trying to squeeze child support out of him legally if he'd already been helping a reasonable amount with the kids? I see it as it was nice of him to stay involved on a "kindly sperm-donating uncle" level already, so why try to force him to fully support them after the breakup?

The larger issue is that of 3 parents being held responsible for the child's upbringing. By this logic women who cuckold men could draw support by both the non-biological father who was biologically defrauded AND the biological father at the same time.

This case is part of one of my research projects... Just an FYI, this case is about 4 years old.

I know there is a lot to get up in arms about, and I agree. The issue rises from the fact that they never went through the proper channels. If he would have filed this properly, this would have not happened. This was more of a casual agreement. I hate it, but breaking this would break a lot of good precedent.

When I was a child my parents (hetero couple) had a friend. He helped my dad on the farm, was always around, baby sat us, bought us presents, took us to McDonalds. Did a lot of "dad stuff"

I would be obtuse to try and say his role had no fatherly aspects. I'm sure he would agree.

Should he have been stuck paying child support because of it? Why or why not? What's the difference between these two scenarios?

If I had had two "poor helpless women" raising me would it be different?

If my dad had left my mom would people have argued it's okay for her to go after both of them because they both had a fatherly role?

Are emotionally absent fathers not on the hook because they never really took up the role of father? Why or why not? What are the criteria we use to determine responsibility? Playing the father role, contributing sperm, having your name on a birth certificate? In what scenario would a man not be considered responsible for child support?

Or is it just that men are always on the hook, always guilty, always responsible, and always expendable?

I say this is good. It is fucking horrendous in many ways, but the more shit like this happens the more the sperm bank will dry up. Then all the single mommies by choice won't be able to have children which means less fucked up children from single mother families and so on.

I find it really odd that women, whether single women or lesbians, think they are entitled to sperm. I don't think the majority of men think they are entitled to wombs or reproduction but for some reason women think they have a right to have children....you can actually find feminists who claim women have a right to have children.
