How do you define, explain, and express “romantic love”?

I am not looking for any definitions from the dictionary or the sidebar. I don’t want your theories on how men and women experience love differently. If you have ever loved someone romantically or felt you were “in love,” I want to know what love is, feels like, and looks like to you. I think that maybe love means something different to us all.

I remember asking many questions about this to the adults in my life when I was young. What does love feel like? How do you know when you are in love? How do you know when you’ve met the person you should marry? Every time, I got the same basic answer, from men and women alike. “You just know.”

Well...wtf? I’m 25 now and still haven’t gotten a straight answer. Even my friends in relationships tell me the exact same thing. Why do you love your SO? Or, how do you know he/she is really the one? - “I just do!”

So I’m turning to my friends at PPD. How do you personally define love? Is it a feeling? Is it a choice? Is it something fleeting you can hold for many people at a time? Is it something deep with one person that lasts a lifetime? Is it simply a chemical reaction? Is it something beyond our understanding? Something out of your control or something you choose to engage with?

How do you know when you are in love with somebody? If you have been in love, what did it feel like? Do you remember the moment you realized you were in love? Do you know why it happened? Was it a conscious decision to engage in loving that person or did it happen after some casual encounters?

What is it that makes you fall in love with someone? Is it their looks and mannerisms? Their personality? The memories you share with them? The things they do for you? Some undefinable combination of all of the above?

What does being in love make you want to do for that person AKA how do you express your romantic love? How do you want love to be expressed back to you? How do you know someone is in love with you too? Is it in words or in actions or in something undefinable perhaps?

You don’t have to answer all these questions directly; pretty please just explain it as best you can! I have looked at the evidence and now I'm looking for purely anecdotal evidence as to what love feels like and how it affects you.
