I’ll come in with the answer that I believe is true but nobody wants to hear - a man who wants to get married is going to drive the timeline conversation and he’s going to do it within the first six months. A man who is not asking you or says generic things like “I want to be married and have kids” but never gets into specifics about planning doesn’t want to marry you. Men who want to get married make it very, very clear.*

*exceptions for very young guys, under 25 or so

I brought it up at the 6 month mark because of Laura Doyle, he said it was too early but he could see getting engaged around the one year mark. I brought it up again around our one year anniversary, and half-jokingly said “I’m not the kind of girl you can keep waiting for too long”, but he knew I wasn’t actually kidding. Two weeks later he took me ring shopping and bought the ring the same day! We plan to get married around our two year anniversary.

My husband and I dated for 2.5 years, then were engaged for just under a year. So about 3.5 years before we were married. We’re about to hit our 5-year anniversary, and we also have our first kid now.

My husband probably would’ve proposed sooner if not for certain circumstances. And I definitely don’t think it should take 5+ years to know you want to marry someone.

Originally I wanted a wedding sooner rather than later. Then covid happened and my entire career fell apart (I worked in the live entertainment industry), so I went to university to retrain. I made the decision to put off getting married until after my studies, because this was such a stressful time and I did not want to rush a beautiful lifechanging event with my fiance just because I did not have the mental capacity for it. It has now been 5 years since we became engaged and we are planning for around this time next year. I am glad I waited, we have grown so much together and I can see how retraining in a new field has made me feel like I am capable and strong enough to be a good wife to him.

If I had not studied, I would have halved my salary and I think that would have caused a bit of stress in our relationship. He has chronic illness, and I wanted to be able to take care of him if he became as unwell as his father did around his age. His mother is an angel, I love her to pieces. She not only cares for his father with the everyday help, she raised two intelligent, strong boys who understand so much more about the world because of the effort she put in. She is who I look up to, and has been such a reliable support for me. They experienced some financial hardship due to her only being at the beginning of her career training when he became unwell, and I wanted to do all I could to prevent that from happening in my marriage. My partner has investments and a lot in savings, but I still want to be able to take control if he needs me to. I could not have had this certainty without taking that time to retrain and refocus.

I’m one of those “stuck” ones; been together 5.5 years (I’ve been ready to get married for the past 3), we have lived together for about 3.5 years, and I just feel trapped. I’m anxious about staying and waiting in perpetuity, and scared to say “Listen I love you but we obviously want different things or I’m not truly wife material for you, so it’s time for me to move on”. We met at 27 and 30 and discussed timelines theoretically on our second date. We started discussing marriage between us hypothetically after we slept together, at eight months. At one year, in June, he started planning to propose before Thanksgiving, so he could announce it to his family. He proposed four days before Thanksgiving of 2016, because he's a ridiculous procrastinator who keeps his word about the important stuff. We married May 6, 2017.

Not that you asked, but first two babies at four years, third at five years, fourth just before seven years. I wouldn't change it for anything.

I've never given it much thought but I suppose 6 months is a good time frame. There could be other things to consider, such as educational goals, etc. But I also agree that dragging things out almost indefinitely isn't a good idea either.

In my case I was still slightly reeling from my divorce and I was being cautious in approaching the relationship with my future husband. He wanted to marry me but I was putting the breaks on. Nevertheless, things took an unexpected turn and we eloped after dating for a little over a year and a half.

the desire for marriage was pre-conditional to approaching me at all. i am conservative religious and in my culture thats just how we do it in general. men only approach a religious girl if he wants to marry her and if they like each other the proposal happens very quickly. because of that i already know from him showing interest that he considers marriage.

My husband and I did wait 5 years to get engaged but that’s because we met and dated during our entire college time. Immediately after we finished our Master’s program, we got engaged and then married the next year.

However, we did start talking after like a year about marriage and kids and responsibilities so we were well versed in that stuff before the wedding.

I was open and upfront about it from the start. Got engaged two month in and married two years latter. We now are nearing eighteen years and six kids.

My biggest suggestion is make sure the man knows off the bat you’re looking for marriage. If he is still not talking about it by six months it’s probably time to go. If no ring by the year mark it is past time to move on.
