Quick question, my sister is a feminist, and when I accused a female teacher of playing favorites with girls and called that teacher sexist, she says that it isn't sexist because she's a women.

Seriously though, some feminists (and even the general population) believe that women cannot be sexist. I assume due to perceived past sexism and oppression against them. What that has to do with someone's ability to be prejudice or outright bigoted, I have no idea.

So yes, women can be and often are sexist. The weird part is, some women are sexist against other women! But typically, when a female is sexist, its against men.

It is, however, misandry, which is the other side of sexism -- which is itself just one of the many forms discrimination in general can take.

She seems to be going by what some people consider to be the social justice definition of sexism, which is that sexism has to be discrimination backed by institutional privilege. Most feminists would say that men have this, and therefore, men are the only ones who can be sexist. The thing is, its pretty much irrelevant whether its "sexism" or not in the context of the teacher treating her students unfairly. Don't let your sister derail the discussion. If she refuses to recognize it as sexism, just call it discrimination (which playing favorites based on gender clearly is) and continue the discussion from there.

So the basic argument for this nonsense is:

1) sexism = discrimination + power

2) only men can ever have power

3) women can never be sexist, even if they discriminate

The same thing is done with racism--ethnic studies professors will tell you that only white people have power, therefor non-whites are never racist, even of they are prejudiced.

Obviously, the very act of inventing a set of terminology in which you can never be criticized is itself a display of power, even if it isn't very effective.

It's a common feminist strategy to deny an accusation by performing an act that epitomizes the very thing they are accused of. In this case, your teacher said something sexist to deny that one of her former claims is sexist. This presumably serves to shock and confuse the victim, as well as make them feel that they will suffer more of the abuse they are protesting against if they choose to continue the conversation. It's what people with cluster B personality disorders generally do, and I suspect there are plenty of such people in the movement.
