Divorced Canuck here, same circumstances - paying far too much for child support, based upon the fact that I used to make a load of cash (in real estate, which was hot at the time, 5+ years ago). Lawyers and Judges all say the reasoning for the high payments continuing is that a lot of guys used to drop the good job and high pay in order to "punish" the ex, despite the economy being out of my control. Doesn't change the fact that I'm still broke, and now without a license or passport due to the maintenance enforcement program.

As a woman that is anti-feminist I have to insist that accepting alimony, spousal support or any form of funding from your ex for personal use is prostitution on the deferred payment plan. I am a traditional, stay at home-barefoot-and pregnant-have-dinner-on-table-type and there is no way I would ever stoop to taking my ex husband's money. When we were married, it was our money. As soon as he left I opened my own bank account and he had his and I had mine. Then message she sends he sons is offensive. The lesson she teaches her daughters by example is atrocious.

I am a firm supporter of the MRA crowd. That said, all you guys are doing right now is reading way too much into a one sentence "tweet". He effectively didn't tell us anything right here. Also, alimony is not always wrong. Let me give you an example.

Man and woman are married and live together for 30 years. He supported the family financially the entire time. She raised 4 kids, did all of the household duties and thus didn't have time to pursue her own career. This arrangement was agreed upon between both partners. The man spent that time building a business worth millions. After the last kid finished college, he decided he no longer wanted to be with his wife and wants to screw hot 20 year olds while traveling the world instead. Thus he sold his business for millions and now has an annual income of $20k, which is interest income at our current rates (lol). Should he only have to pay her alimony based on his current income, or all the previous income from when they were together?

Ok yeah this is an extreme case. However, it does point out that alimony isn't obsolete or always wrong. I think most of us agree that she should get a decent chunk of change here. Just because alimony is abusable doesn't mean all alimony is wrong - that is a very extreme position.

This example also points out why you don't read into one sentence complaints about family court decisions. All of the dynamics that go into family court decisions should be articulated thoroughly in order to reach any kind of meaningful conclusion. Is the conclusion to my example, "Oh well the dude only makes 20k now... so he should have to give her like 5k a year."? Didn't think so - because that ignores all of those other important variables. And in Dave Foley's case we hardly know any of the variables.

Why are you guys upvoting such a meaningless complaint? Why are so many guys saying how awful alimony is and that it should be abolished 100%? It is really takes away from the credibility of this subreddit.

tldr: twitter makes you retarded. This case might be a lot more complicated than he is making it out to be. In the end we don't know if this was an injustice or not. The information provided to us is empty sensationalism. Alimony isn't always bad.

I'd like to hear more info first...

For instance, is he claiming that they're trying to make him pay 3x his income right now (ie. when he's not working). I assume he's not starring in a movie or tv show at this very instant, so his income is probably minimal. But, that sure as hell doesn't mean he's destitute! If you remember, they were throwing money at the Kids in the Hall, but Foley killed that all by himself. If he really wanted, he could easily get another Canadian tv series off the ground (or a new season of Kids). There are a thousand indie films out there that would pay him $100,000+ to star. He's not a big draw anymore, but still...

I once watched NewRadio being taped in LA. The Motorized armchair episode. The cast came our into the crowd, Joe Rogan told the dirtiest French Chef joke, Andy Dick gave us candy bars. I have watched The Kids in the Hall for years,even saw his live show in LA. All I can say is don't do the crime, if you can't do the crime.
