Story time:

I used to live in a bit of a dodgy neighbourhood. Quite often while walking home late at night there would be a woman (not the same woman each time) walking by herself a few metres in front of me.

Admittedly I don't look like the kind of person that I would want to meet in a dark alley, but it still hurt when the lady would quicken her pace and tighten her grip on her handbag.

I would often cross over to the other side of the road so that she wouldn't think that I was following her. Unfortunately I would have to cross over to the original side of the road again to enter my apartment complex and often that would heighten her anxiety.

This was my first ever taste of stereotyping and it opened my eyes quite a bit.

You see, it just so happens that the trail I was on was also the trail she was on, so I was a little taken aback when she asked me not to "follow her", since we were both heading in the "natural" direction for that trail. But, not wanting to end up on the sex offender registry for somehow being a stalker, and also because I'm a gentleman, I complied with her request and turned around. I also realize that my long hair may have made her a bit uncomfortable, but that's just because I'm in a rock band, but can't rockers enjoy a jog every once in a while too? Now I get this e-mail this morning, and I'm scared to shit about what's going to happen to me if the police do investigate further, for the crime of being a guy in a public park.

This happens a lot on college campuses. There were so many times that I would walk home from a night lab and every girl would constantly look back as if someone is following them. I had a girl once who kept looking back at me every so often, after awhile, just to keep it from being super awkward, I turned and walked a path that was out of my way.

Yes, the UCSC police are overly sensitive to what goes on the the park. Not that this excuses it but most of Pogonip was closed for a while last year due to drug use.

So, when women notice someone walking behind them, they shouldn't do anything. But when women are assaulted, damn they shoulda been more careful/not worn that top.

I'm probably the least threatening looking person, but when someone ahead of me speeds up at night because they hear me walking behind them, I don't take personal offense. It's just instinct to try and protect yourself. Don't take it personally.

Three weeks ago I was jogging through Fairmount park. I tend to only run there during my lunch break but on that day I had to work through lunch. I don't know if any of you are like me but I can't stand to miss my daily run. So, after work I changed into my jogging gear and went out.

I had my ipod playing some great tunes and reached that point of jogger's bliss where you feel like you can just go forever. The sun started to set and the street lights came on. The evening was beautiful and perfect. It made me happy that I missed my regular noon-time schedule.

After about 2 miles I planned on making a final turn through the playground area and heading home. Once I got past the playground I looked up ahead and saw some guys out on the basketball court shooting hoops. It seemed like a perfect night for it. If I knew any of them I would have asked to join in. I was a little surprised that I didn't due to the fact that this court is very close to my apartment.

As I got a little closer I noticed that something wasn't quite right. Apparently they weren't actually playing ball. I then realized that they were up to no good. In fact they were right there in my own neighborhood making trouble. When I confronted them we got into a little fight. Upon arriving home my mother expressed her concern. She told me that for my own safety she would prefer it if I moved to California to live with my aunt and uncle in Bel-Air.
