Basically the title. All the statistics and observations about dating and sex in the OLD era (and really the last 40 years or so) cannot be ascribed to deep, unchanging truths about reality, but are just the natural progression of a culture that prioritizes youth, with all its messy indiscretions and naive emotional hyper-resolution.

Humans are adaptable, almost infinitely so. Generalizations of course can, and must be made in order to understand trends and population level behaviors. But the reality is that everyone's individual collage of experiences truly is unique, and this means that there is near infinite variation in our actions, and these are paved over with excessively neat reductions of humanity to suit our ideological agendas.

We are pattern seeking creatures, and moreover, we have emotional connections to the patterns we visualize in order to make sense of our lives and why things are the way they are. Often to minimize the role of randomness, and especially our own responsibility in the results.

No one likes arguing about nuance, because it's tedious. But we all expect nuanced takes of our own behavior, because deep down we know that the universe is not as simple as our emotions (and judgments of others) want it to be.
