I have an absence of belief in the existence of deities, therefore I could classify my self as an atheist. Does that make me religious? Not in my own classification system.
[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
therefore I could classify my self as an atheist.
You don't classify yourself as an atheist. It's done for you merely by not believing in a god.
[–]PLForEver 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah you are right, the whole atheism concept works kinda differently on my native tongue.
[+]merkwuerdig_liebe -12 points-11 points-10 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That’s called agnosticism. Atheism is the belief that there definitely is no God, so in a way, it IS a religion.
[–]PLForEver 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just checked what internet says and wikipedia seems to take in all atheists varying from "absence of divine faith" to "actively denying the existence of god "
Not that I care, there are days I like to argue that divine powers do not exist and there are days that I am just happy to not have any faith towards a higher being. Having been born in to a cult, I like it this way :)
[–]peterrocks9 -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I would say it is more a dogma than a religion.
[–]merkwuerdig_liebe -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s fair, although it appears to be rapidly evolving into an informal religion that one might call “scientism”.

[–]Eleusis713 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't know if this describes you but from what I understand, many Jewish people, even some conservative rabbis, identify as "Jewish-Atheist". They don't actively believe in a god but they find meaning and importance in maintaining Jewish traditions.
[–]Comfortable_Ad_9154 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's a thing, its increasingly more common the farther away from strict orthodoxy. Judiasm has always been more about traditions, than anything else.

[–]jt_totheflipping_o 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's a philosophical view.
Question is, can you force yourself to believe something that you can't. Everyone has a standard of evidence required to believe things (the amount of evidence depends on the subject). If it does not meet that standard, they do not believe it.
Those standards are pretty obviously developed through values gained over life as you interact with more things and people. You did not choose your first influences and those influences, influence everything there after in a cycle.
You do not choose your beliefs, if you somehow do, you were predisposed to believing that thing anyway as there was enough evidence for you to think it could be true.

Here are the results for religion.
https://pragmatarian.home.blog/2019/02/07/what-makes-an-mra-part-1-summary-level-demographics/
Religiosity & spirituality.
The data from this survey indicate that the men’s rights community on Reddit is a fairly areligious group. Seven out of ten individuals reported belonging to a non-religious group – 33.2% identified as agnostic, 36.8% as atheist, and 0.9% as anti-theist. The remaining 29.1% of respondents broke down as follows:
Buddhist: 1.8%
Chinese Traditionalist: 0.9%
Catholic Christian: 6.8%
Protestant Christian: 11.8%
Eastern Orthodox Christian: 1.4%
Jewish: 2.3%
Muslim: 0.9%
Sikh: 0.5%
Other: 2.7%

I'm atheist.
At primary school I had protestant Christianity shoved down my throat. Every morning the class had to stand up and say the Lord's Prayer (this wasn't a choice, we just had to do it like it or not) and at weekly assemblies we had to sing Jesus songs ("I've got that joy joy joy joy down in my heart" ugh).
What a waste of time that was.

[+]tenchineuro -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
For some it is.
[–]Eleusis713 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No its not. Atheism is a term that describes a lack of belief in a god. That's all it is. There is no requirement to actively believe in anything else. People who identify as atheist can believe all kinds of different things and none of those things are tied to their atheism.
[–]PARACHUTING_MOOSE -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No he (or possibly she) meant some people take being an atheist so seriously they treat like some christian-hating cult. (cough cough r/atheism).
[–]Flyb0mb -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And yet it has objectively everything to do with their atheism. You cannot have one without the other. By whatever standards you live your life by, whatever determines your morality, is directly related to what you believe to be true and contrasted to what others believe to be true, and everyone developes a self-righteous out look desperately trying to validate what they want to be true. You see, religion is getting skewed in a sense with meaning. Ultimately, what you place value in and influences your choices, actions, and thoughts, in itself is a religion. Imo.
[–]PARACHUTING_MOOSE 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True, but less like a religion, more like a cult.

In the old language? Maybe. I'm not an expert. But in modern English no.
[–]elebrin 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't think the question is a good one.
Do I believe? Not sure. I do follow Christian traditions and culture, and I have a strong backing in Christian mythology.
Religions, however, are more than just some beliefs or dogma. They are a system of beliefs, but they are also a set of rituals and a community, and different religions put the emphasis on different bits.
Christianity really subverts that reality. The core belief is accepting Jesus as your savior and taking that internal journey of belief, and to many Christians, that is the only activity that makes you Christian. Other religions aren't really like that. Islam absolutely requires active participation in all three (obeying the pillars/ceremonies, having a deep personal belief, and participating in the community).
Culturally speaking, I celebrate Christian holidays and have participated in Christian ceremonies including observing several of the Sacraments. If we were talking about any other religion, I would be considered Christian. I do consider myself part of the Christian tradition and culture. Nobody from another tradition would call me anything but Christian after observation.
That said, I don't particularly carry the belief that I have been or need to be "saved." I find Christian mythology to be relevant to my life, and to my understanding of Western culture, but there is a lot dogmatically that I do not accept as objective truth.

You’re seriously gonna say all people are good? Lmaoo
[–]Reddit_Sux_Hardcore -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, I will.
For those that aren't good, we must ask why. They were taught wrong, they were brainwashed/indoctrinated. Sociopaths are due to a problem with the brain, for example.
People want to do good and be good, they just don't do good things for a variety of reasons - much having to do with us tolerating bad parenting and religion topped off with the inability to detect and treat brain issues as well as we should.

I think you're blowing things out of proportion. If someone doesn't want to answer, they don't have to. If they feel it's inappropriate they can scroll past. It's not serious but I think religious beliefs or lack of would be interesting to see in a sub like this. I don't really see how dick lengths are remotely applicable.
[+][deleted] 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
[permanently deleted]
In forming my own opinion based of of data, yeah, I'd say I have the final say in what I think is applicable to my interpretation, it doesn't mean I'm going to stop you from feeling that knowing dick lengths isn't applicable. By all means, go ahead and ask everyone if you think its important. People are able to use the data in their own way.
Also, I'd still say this is related to men's rights because the data is about the beliefs of MRA's. It would be the same if I asked gay people what they believed in in a lgbt sub because the data would still be about the beliefs of gay people. My data is about the beliefs of MRAs, sure, if I gave data on the religious beliefs of dog owners, that would be completely irrelevant. Also, im not stopping the mods from removing my post. I hold no power over them, go ahead and ask them to remove it if you feel so strongly about it.
