Give it to me straight.

I'll be 27 in April and my husband will be 30 next October. We both have great jobs, a spacious house, and our relationship is in a healthy place. He knows I want to start now and he's made concessions: 28 is the very latest I'd be willing to start trying for my first, he agrees. I got my IUD out (it was expiring) and switched to FAM for me + the contraception methods of his comfort. We both accepted the very slightly increased risk of an oops.

But, he says no. Because finances.

Now, I don't think this is unreasonable and I show my support in his decision. I play my supplemental role in being thrifty and aggressive with paying off our debt and building savings where I can because his clear communication on why is a gift and a direction.

We are aware that I get a five months of maternity leave and he gets six weeks. We have excellent health insurance and many additional benefits and flexibilities through our admittedly cushy jobs.

But he is spending good money on modding his car, video game hobbies, dining out, discussing and planning guys trips, all wants. I also recognize a baby is a want too, not a need. But we are running out of extra money at the end of the month that could go towards debt because of the way he is allocating funds (as is his role in the household), so the progress is extremely slow. Realistically, with buckling down harder and with upcoming bonuses and raises, we could be in an ideal position by summer.

I just feel we are not planning for the same thing. I don't say anything about his spending. My ideal is we would start trying now while paying off debt and leaving some room for a little (but reduced) extra enjoyment. Everybody wins. The wait would be easier with a tangible goal such as that. But that's not happening right now.

I recognize the gravity of wanting a child. I'm not asking for luxury items and trips. I know motherhood is hard but I've checked all my other personal boxes (excellent career, hobbies and interests, friendships, family relationships, self-care/mental health) and recognize he has a different focus right now (as I would expect from a 29M who wants to climb the career ladder). I just want a compromise but am too afraid of asking and turning him off to the subject or having to criticize him in order to explain my POV. Millionaires aside, most people are never 100% ready and we are no exception. I don't think he understands how common it is not to conceive immediately. Is there anything I can do other than to STFU and stand by as we make minimal financial progress?

tl;dr Husband says no to baby soon due to finances but is not leading us towards that financial goal. I don't want to build resentment towards his leadership and I'm struggling with this strong desire not being met.
