I think a guy, let’s call him John, that wanted to date me did this to my car with just a regular tracker. It came up in conversation that John’s close friend did this to his wife when he suspected her of cheating. The story stuck in my head and later John made some smug comment about how I don’t really go anywhere. It was odd. I asked him how he could possibly know that and he made some evasive comment about my car not having many miles. It’s funny because I live in the city and walk a lot and usually Uber places at night on the weekends. Later it occurred to me, he’s never been in my car…

This is scary.

And, I think the only solution to this problem is if each tracker is registered to its owner. If you find a tracker that isn't yours, you can find out the owner (or have law enforcement do so, at least). And then the owner needs to be held responsible. I just don't know which laws apply in such a case. Maybe we need some new laws... About cyber stalking and breach of privacy. Among others.

I read the Twitter thread and it was chilling. In the airtag case, if you don't have an iphone apparently you need to download a new app you need to refresh and manually have it scan for your environment every time you want to be sure no one is following you. So of course I believe Samsung and Apple need at least to provide apps that can scan both types of tags no matter what phone you have. But now there are the generic stalking devices. For Apple, they claim they can't tell you whose airtag it belongs to which I think is stupid.

Had this happen to me earlier this week. Was at the airport at baggage claim and my phone was blowing up about trackers following me. Of course it was just someone on my flight getting their bag too, but it still freaked me out before I realized what was happening.
